This study explores the philosophical and yogic concepts within the Yogatattva Upanishad—an ancient Sanskrit text wihchi s part of the Vedic literature that delves into the essence of yoga and meditation, linking mental control to spiritual enlightenment. The thesis also emphasizes the importance of eightfold path (or Ashtanga Yoga) and the integra...
Part 3 - Chanting of importance Om (Omkara)
Our ancient sages have expressed Brahman through the term 'OM' is known as 'aksara Brahman'. 'OM' should be contemplated upon as Brahman by all who aspire for emancipation. 'OM' is known as 'Pranava'. The first amsa or part of Pranava is ''A' kara(A) when 'A' kara becomed absorbed, prthivi, agni, rgveda, bhuh and Brahma- all these are absorbed this 'A' kara is of (pita) yellow colour and is said to be of rajaguna. The second part of pranava is 'U' kara (U). When 'U' kara of pranava becomes absorbed Antariksa, yajurveda, vayu, bhuvah and Visnu, the Janardana-all these are absorbed 'U' kara is of white colour and of sattvaguna. The third amsa of pranava is 'Ma' kara (M) when this 'Ma' kara of 'OM' becomes absorbed Dyur, sun, samaveda, suvah and Mahes' varaall these are absorbed. 'Ma' kara is of dark colour and of tamoguna pranava is just like a bow and Atma is the arrow to got Brahman because Brahman is said to be the aim of all, when one with Brahman. The short (the accent of OM) burns every song, the long does not decay and the giver of unlimited prosperity with ardhamatra (half a meter 115
of OM), and the pranava becomes the giver of salvation. 'OM' is the single best way to achieve salvation and unite with parambrahman. 'OM' is the symbol of Brahma or the Supreme Being when we meditate on 'OM' we must recite one must contemplate OMkara is Isvara a thumb and is motionless at the center of the pericarp of the heart lotus. That man is he known from the Vedas who knows that the end (ardhamatra) of Pranava is to be worshiped (or recited) as continuously as the flow of oil and (with resonance) as long as the ringing of a bell. Once again 'OM' is the destroyer of all sins committed by man. Those who consider 'OM' as the form of Hamsa dwelling in everything shining like millions of suns, being only in gamagama (ever-coming and going) and being destitute, that person is free from sin. So, it can be said that 'OM' and "Omkara" is very much essential for all to meditate in Brahman. Concepts of "Yoga" in Dhyanabindu Upanisad: There are six parts of yoga in Dhyanabindu Upanisad. They are -i) Postures (Asana) i) Restrants of breath (Prana samrodhah) ii) Subjugation of the sence (Pratyahara) iii) Dharana (dharana) iv) Dhyana (dhyanam) v) Samadhi (Samadhi) There are as many postures as there are living creatures and Mahesvara the great lord knows their distinguishing features. There are 116
also four chief postures about of many. They are -i) Siddha ii) Bhadra iii) Simha and iv)Padma. Concepts of Cakra The word cakra means 'wheel' in the Sanskrit language. They are called this because they are seeing clairvoyantly as a series of wheellike vortexes of energy in a person. At the main points where nadis interseet there is a cakra, which is considered in the energy body to be a kind of energy modulator or transducer and in the 'mind' bodies as a switch for the different aspects of the personality. There are seven major cakras, which are situated along the spinal axis. Out of seven cakras three are described in Dhyanabindu Upanisad. They are- i) Muladhara ii) Svadhisthana and iii) Manipurak. Muladhara cakra Muladhara is the first cakra. In the Adhara of the anus there is the four-petalled lotus. It is said that at the center of it is the yoni called kama and worshiped by saddhu. In the middle of the yoni is the linga which faces west and spills out at its top like a gem. The knower of the Vedas is one who knows the action of muladhara. Muladhara is a quadrilateral figure situated above the agni and below the genital organ in the form of molten gold and shining like rays. Svadisthana Cakra Svadisthana Cakra is the second cakra which is described in dhyanabindu Upanisad. The cakra svadisthana is spoken of as the genital organ itself. 'Prana' is with its sva (own) sound, having svadisthana as its adisthana (seat), or sva or prana arises from svadisthana. 117
Manipura Cakra Muladhara is the first cakra. III.I What is Om? OM is the omnipresent sound that comes from God. The sound OM is the beginning of creation. OM emanates from cosmic vibration. OM is all in all. OM is the mystical word of power. OM is the word of wonderful power. OM is the support and support of all. Just as the president represents the voice of the people of a country, so too OM represents the voice of all the names of God, because OM is the substratum or matrix or basis of all the sounds or names. All names, sounds or words are included in OM. OM is the king of all sounds or words. OM is the ocean in which all rivers of sounds, names and words flow. OM is the voice of all creation. OM is the voice of the Guru. OM is the voice of Hiranyagarbha. OM is the voice of the Vedas. OM is the basis of all sounds. OM is the cosmic sound. OM is the main sound of the universe. OM is the priceless treasure of a student on the Joga's yoga road. OM is the password of the Vedanti. OM is the passport of those who sail on the boat of knowledge of the Self to reach the other shore of courage and immortality, Brahman. 118
OM is the Soul of Souls. OM is the Light of lights. OM is the panacea for the destruction of sins and the terrible disease of death. OM is the celestial ambrosia that confers immortality. OM is the sacred Triveni in the Trikuti. Meditate on OM. Immerse yourself in OM. Take a dive into OM. This is the holiest bath which will put out the fire of Samsara. OM represents the canvas or background. The shapes of this universe represent the paintings on the canvas. The canvas is real, but the image on the canvas is unreal, because the fire on the canvas cannot burn your fingers, the knife on the canvas cannot cut your fingers, and the tiger on the canvas cannot bite you. However, OM or Brahman is the only solid reality. The names and shapes are as unreal as the images on the canvas. OM, the true Atman is the substratum of all sounds, languages, body, mind, Prana and senses, the Karana-sarira and the five sheaths, and this universe. Just as substratum is a substratum or layer, a fundamental element, the substance in which qualities exist, so OM is the substratum or underlying reality in which all objects appear like waves in the ocean. Waves are mere appearances. So even the forms are mere appearances. The shapes are unreal. Forms are unreal in the sense that they are changeable and impermanent. In the example of the ocean and the waves, only the ocean is real. However, only OM or Brahman is real. OM is a single syllable and due to the nature of Atman, all words are simplified into a single Pranava, the OM to describe Brahman. OM is Taraka Mantra, that is, the Mantra that helps man to cross the ocean of Samsara, worldly existence. Trataka is only Brahman. Only Trataka or OM should be worshiped. OM is the essence of Vedanta. OM is the tallest flower of the Upanisad tree. OM is the root of the entire universe. OM is Aksara- 119
Brahman. OM is the source of all words, articulations and languages. OM is the source of all words, articulations and languages. OM is the real name of Brahman. OM is the symbolic representation of Brahman, the Immortal Self. OM is the word of power. OM is the Pranava. OM is the sacred monosyllable of the Vedas. OM is Udgita. Each of the letters that make up OM is a symbol of each of the aspects in which Brahman is known. OM is the spirit, substratum or essence. OM is the immortal Soul. OM is the Holy Spirit. OM is the inner music of the Soul. OM is the music of silence. OM is the cream of the Upanisads. OM is the supreme pinnacle of the magnificent hill of Vedanta. That in which there is neither hunger nor thirst, neither sadness nor pain, neither 'you' nor 'he', neither 'this' nor 'that', neither 'here' nor 'there', neither yesterday nor tomorrow, nor est nor 'Tomorrow'. The West, neither sound nor color, neither light nor darkness, neither seeing nor seen, is OM. , That imperishable Brahmic seat or ineffable splendor, that indefinable, inexhaustible, limitless Essence which permeates the entire universe, what Western philosophers call the continuum or the residue or the noumenon, that place where every word stops, all thoughts cease where the function of the intellect and all the organs stop, is OM. "OM is this", "OM is support"; "He with pure desire should concentrate his mind on the Atman through OM, which is the Atman"; "OM is Brahman"; "The word OM is everything": these and other Sruti texts clearly highlight the usefulness of OM in the process of realizing Brahman, the Immortal Being. They declare that OM, Brahman and Atman are the same. OM is the symbol and natural name of Brahman. Chanting OM, OM japa and meditating on OM purifies the mind, eliminates the tremors of the mind, destroys the veil of ignorance and helps the aspirant to merge in Brahman. All Mantras begin with OM. All the Upanisads begin with OM. All 120
religious ideas are centered on OM. The breath always sings OM, the song of infinity and immortality. The thought of OM elevates everyone's minds. The Christians, the Jews, end their prayers with 'Amen', which is a modification of OM. Muslims end, their prayers with "Ahmeen," also a modification of OM. The Mandkya Upanisad, Mundaka Upanisad, Chandogya Upanisad, Prasnopanisad, Kathaopanisad, the Gita and the Brahma Sutras sing the glory of OM. OM is your life. OM is your own breath. OM is the life of the Vedas. OM is the life of the al Mantra. OM is the bliss of the world. OM that's all. OM is a common mantra. OM is the common property of all. All the various meanings are centered on OM. Even Parvati and Saraswati could not fully express the meaning of OM. Such is the glory of OM. OM represents the Divinity or soul of all religions and creeds, civilizations and schools. It should be accepted by everyone. Just as the rope is the substratum of the serpent and just as Brahman is the substratum of prana, mind, senses and body, so too OM is the substratum or cause of the entire illusion of speech. The Sruti declares: "Everything is a mere play on words"; "Everything is held together at all times by the chain of discourse or the string of specific names"; "Everything is possible in experience only through words." Nothing can exist outside of words. Names and forms are inseparable. Thought and language are inseparable. All effects are nothing more than simple names. This whole phenomenal world of experience can never exist without names. All objects must necessarily be named. You must call a man by his name. Although there is nothing but Brahman, you cannot say 'Brahman', 'Brahman', 'Brahman' when you want to say "O Govind! Give me water." Names cannot exist without OM. Therefore everything is OM. 121
III.II Composition of OM 'A', 'U', 'M' are the life of all articulated words. 'A' and 'U' when connected merge into 'O'. Therefore, the correct way to write OM is AUM. The 'A' of the sacred monosyllable AUM is a symbol of the Virat aspect (gross manifestation), the 'U' of Hiranyagarbha, Karya-brahman, (subtle manifestation) and the 'M' of the Isvara aspect, Karana-brahman, (state unmanifest of Brahman). OM is called Sat-Nam or (EK) OMkara by the Sikhs, Jehovah by the Jews, Allah Hoo by the Muslims, Ahuramazda by the Zorastrins, Hanovn by the Persians, Elohem by the Christians, Too by the Chinese and Monad by the Greeks. OM is called Pranava because it passes through the prana of life force and permeates life. As already mentioned, OM is divided into 'A', 'U' and 'M2. 'A' means the waking state (Jagrat Avastha), 'U' the dream state (Svapna Avastha) and 'M' the deep sleep state (Susupti avastha), while OM taken as a single unit, represents the fourth state, Turiya, which transcends the three previous states. The hypnotic rhythm of repeating OM causes stillness in the mind. Chanting of OM, silent OM japa and meditation on OM create harmonious vibrations in the mind or subtle body, elevate the mind to magnanimous heights of divine splendor and ultimately elevate the consciousness to the state of Turiya in which the meditator loses his individual consciousness and merges. The same in the Supreme Soul, the all-pervading Brahmic Consciousness. What is OM is the imperishable and immutable noumenon, the Supreme Brahman. OM includes the experiences of man in the three states, namely, waking state, dreaming state and deep sleeping state. OM represents all manifested and unmanifested planes. 'A' represents the physical plane and the waking state, 'U' represents the astral or mental plane and the dream state, 'M' indicates everything that is out of the reach of the intellect, everything that 122
is unknown and deep sleep state. Corresponding to the four states, waking state, dream state, deep sleep state and Turiya, the mystical expression of OM is supposed to have four syllables, each of which represents a corresponding position in both the macrocosm and the microcosm. . , The four sounds are 'A', 'U', 'M' and the indescribable vibration that is the essence of everything (Ardhamatra). Now the meaning of the Mandukya Upanisad deals with the identity of 'A', visva and Virat; 'U', Taijasa and Hiranyagarbh; 'M' Prajna and Isvara; and the Ardhamatra, the essential vibration of Om, Turiya and Pure Brahman. All measures are designed so that the aspirant can grasp the highest Principle which transcends all worldly character. The universe; the aspects of Brahman which possess divine powers are, therefore, represented as one with the corresponding aspects in the individual. The Anandamaya state of the individual soul is considered to be one with the Isvara or universal soul state. 'A' is Brahman, 'M' is Maya and 'U' is the interaction between the two 'A' and 'M'. The letters 'A' and 'U' are the two wings of the bird Hamsa (OM) of the form of Visnu which goes to Svarga, the abode of Surya, the thousand-rayed God. The syllable Om carries in its heart all the Devas of Sattva-guna. The syllable 'A' is considered to be its right wing (of the OM bird), 'U' its left, 'M' its tail and Ardhamatra its head. From the letter 'A' emerged Upendra called Jambavana. From the letter 'U' emerged Upendra called Hari. From the letter 'M' emerged Siva known as Hanuman. OM also represents tat-tvam-asi Mahavakya. 'A' is Jiva, 'M' is Isvara and 'U' connects the two and shows the identity of Jiva and Isvara (Brahman). In AUM, the letter 'A' represents the masculine principle, the Father; the letter 'U' represents the feminine principle, the Mother; and the letter 'M' represents the Son. You can also say that 'A' means 'I', 'U' means 'this', and 'M'means 'no'. So Om would mean 'I don't' aham etat , 123
na. It doesn't mean ''I', 'this' or 'no'. It means the One Being beyond the names and forms of what is, was and will be forever. OM has eight members. 'A' is the first letter, 'U' is the second; 'M' is the third; Bindu is the fourth; nothing is the fifth; kala is the sixth; kalatita (that which is beyond kala) is the seventh; and that which is beyond all these is the eighth. A kara, U kara, M kara, Ardhamatra, Nada, Bindu, Kala and Sakti are the eight members of OM, Pranava. OM is Saguna and Niguna, Sakara and Nirakara. All triplets are represented by OM. That's why OM is very important. You have to chat and repeat in your head. A U M Brahma Visnu Siva Virat Hiranyagarbha Isvara Visva Tejasa Prajna Father Son Holy Ghost Sarasvati Laksmi Durga Rajas Sattva Tamas Body Mind Soul Gross Subtle causal Jagrat Svapna Susupti Past Present Future 124
Sat Chit Ananda Om nipresence Destruction Om niscience Om nipotence Creation Presevation Being Becom ing Sleep Not sleep Prakriti Jivatma Birth Life Non-being Negation of the two Paramatma Death Here is an extract from Sri Rama Gita translated into English by Pandit G. Krsna Sastri: "It is impossible to make the average reader understand the occult significance and the meaning attached to the names of these Mantras. They refer to highly occult matters reserved for the last stages of initiation. Those fortunate souls that have undergone the highest states of initation into the secrets of anicient Indian white magic and occultism may, with advantage, refer to that portion of "Vairavas Rahasya" which treats of Him and its sixteen as well as the two hundred and fifty-six Mantras. Hrim is said to be the Sthula-pranava and AUM the Suksma-pranava. The 256 Mantras of this Pranava with their application are fully dealt within the "Anubhuti Mimamsa Bhasya" of Appaya Diksitacarya. The Mandukya Upanisad speaks of the Pranava as made up of 'A,' 'U,' 'M' and Ardhamatra. These when applied to Prakrti and Purusa become eight. Another Upanisad makes it sixteen and then thirtytwo. The numbers 128 and then 256 give the further sub divisions of the Pranava. Of these, The first 96 refer to the Tattvas composed of the five vital currents, the five organs of knowledge and action, the five Pranas, 125
mind, intelligence, the five Mahabhutas, the three states of consciousness of the body such as skin, blood, etc., the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) and so on. The main meaning of Pranava is the Supreme, which is known to be of the nature of undivided and Absolute Existence-knowledge-bliss (Sat-cit-ananda). This enables man to reach the other side of the ocean of Samsara. Of the 256 mantras, 128 pertain to the Saguna-brahman demonstrate the Svagatabheda. This is illustrated by the difference existing between the root, branches, leaves, fruits, etc., of the one and the same tree. The tree is the same, but still there are differences between the different parts like branch, leaves, etc. This is said to be the different amonge the several members in the body. 16 of these 128 Matras go to make up the 16 subdivisionals into the gross, the subtle, etc., of the four characteristic known by the names of Viveka, Vairagya, Sad-sampati and Mumuksutva. These pertain to the 16 Atmadhikarinis or persons fit for realizing the Self. These states are Sthulaviveka, Suksmaviveka, Karanaviveka, Turiyaviveka, etc. The remaining 112 are distributed among the seven Jnana Bumikas. Meditation on this Pranava in the form of murmured prayer is helpful in attaining Karama-mukti (progressive emancipation). This is subordinate. But abstract meditation on this is best. The meanings of other names used by devotees are included in the meaning of Pranava. III.III Chanting of Om: Chant OM from the bottom of your heart with deep feeling. When chanting OM, knowing his Omniscience, Omnipotence and Omnipresence, he feels that OM sprouts with its true color, from each nerve, from each vein, from each cell, from each OM, from each molecule, 126
from each electron and from the very blood corpuscle of your body. Pour the vibrations of OM into the world with power, vigor, speed, strength and fortitude. Get ready to recharge now. Now roar like a Vedanta lion and chant OM. He chants OM for five minutes rhythmically with bhava and understanding as soon as you sit down to meditate. You know the meaning of him. The sound should start from the navel and end at the top of the head. The mysterious vibrations produced by chanting OM will produce mental concentration and harmony in Anamaya, Pranayama and Manomaya Kosas (the food sheath, the life sheath and the mental sheath) and harmonize the mind with the Infinite. Drive away bad thoughts by chanting OM. Gain inspiration, power and strength by chanting OM. Gain mental concentration by doing Japa of OM. Dissolve your mind in Brahman by meditating on OM and rest in your Sat-chit-ananda Svarupa. May that OM guide you, protect you, uplift you, take you to the goal and free you from the cycle of birth and death. Whenever you feel depressed, whenever you have a little headache, take a brisk walk and chant OM while walking. While chanting OM you feel that your entire being is filled with divine energy. The song of is a panacea or sovereign remedy for all ills. Try this recipe yourself and feel the miraculous effects of divine medicine. Just as you take medicine two or three times, resort to chanting OM two or three times. Brahman, the Atman, is one with OM. Chanting OM means getting closer to the source and harnessing the cosmic energy which is inexhaustible. When you recite OM you feel, 'I am all health.' All pathogenic or pathogenic germs are destroyed or burned by the vibrations of OM. You can chant OM while 127
sitting in any comfortable Asana in your room to regain, maintain or improve your health. III.IV Benefits of OM Rishis and sages of the past who achieved self-realization experienced the mysterious effects of repeating or chanting OM. After doing extensive research and experiments on OM and its vibrations, they meditated on OM for a considerable period and then gave the world OM as the correct symbol of Brahman. This is not a magic trick or a juggling trick. This is an authoritative statement of the seers (Apta Vakyam). OM served as a lighthouse or safe vessel for them when they sailed in the turbulent and deep and unnavigable waters of this ocean of Samsara. Through OM they ascended safely to the top of the hill of Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the knowledge of the Self, Brahma Jnana. You can safely trust his teachings. There is a mysterious and inscrutable force (Achintyasakti) in OM. This force pierces the veils, destroys desires, cravings and selfishness and takes the aspirant to Brahman. It elevates the Brahmakara Vrtti of the sattvic mind, annihilates the Mula-ajnana and helps the meditator to rest in his own Sat-chit-ananda Svarupa. OM or Pranava is a shining ferry for fallen men in the infinite ocean of worldly life. Many have crossed the ocean of Samsara with the help of this ferry. You can also do this by constantly meditating on OM with bhava and meaning and realizing the Self. OM is the ladder that takes the aspirant to the highest levels of superconsciousness and spiritual heights of splendor and glory. Meditation on OM will reveal to you the laws of the higher planes and spiritual laws. Meditation on OM will give you liberation, immortality, 128
courage, inner spiritual strength, supreme peace, penetrating insight and will change your very being. It will transform you into a Jivanmukta, a liberated sage. It is already known that radio waves travel around the world seven times in one second. Have you ever thought about the effectiveness of this mysterious chanting of OM vibrations? If this scientific fact is true, what I believe is that the vibrations of OM chanting have traveled all over the world. He brought comfort to those people who were depressed, sad, and full of sadness and despair. It has given strength to many selfless workers around the world. He has breathed new spiritual life, vigor and vitality into the hearts of enthusiastic youth, the future hope of India, a glory and blessing to the world at large. It has greatly changed the vicious Samskaras that are rooted in the subconscious mind and the Karanasarira, one's seed body. If you practice reloading you can do it. Siva will fill your heart again and again with the vibration of chanting OM. When a sacrificial or similar rite is found defective, it will ultimately be perfected by the utterance of this powerful OM Mantra. With OM all acts of sacrifice, study of sacred scriptures, spiritual discipline and meditation are committed. If the person making sacrifices remembers OM, all the obstacles that hinder the success of the sacrifices are removed. What does Lord Krishna teach by holding the flute in His hands? What is the symbolic philosophy of the flute? The flute is the symbol of OM. He says: "Empty your selfishness. I will play your body flute. You will become one with My Will. Take refuge in OM. Meditate on OM. You will enter My Being. Listen to the inner moving music of the soul, the music of OM, and rest in eternal peace. 129
Brahman is compared to the Hamsa bird. An adept of Yoga who rides Hamsa, i.e. contemplates OM, he is not affected by karmic influences or by dozens of nuclei of sins. Whoever does Japa of this Mantra in the morning destroys the sins committed during the day. He who recites OM in the morning and evening is freed from sins, no matter how sinful it may be, gets the good effects of reciting all the Vedas and is also freed from the five great sins. Such is the greatness and glory of OM, the name or symbol of Brahman. If you place unshakable faith in the glory of this name, you will be freed from the bondage of births and deaths. If you perform any action by pronouncing OM at the beginning, middle and end, you will achieve perfection and success in the action. III.V Importance of OM The vibrations produced by chanting OM in the material universe correspond to the original vibrations that first appeared from the mouth of Hiranyagarbha, Kalya Brahman. Therefore, ohms are very important. The Bible says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was God." That is OM, the Word of Power. Even Adishesha and Saraswati, even if they used the water of the sea as their ink and all the trees of the world as their pens, would not be able to express the theme of this sacred mantra, 'OM. In Sanskrit, volumes have been written about the meaning of OM, a sacred and mystical monosyllable. All mantras begin with OM. The mantras Pancaksara and Astaksara are included in OM. All the Vedas, all the Vedanta, all the Hindu scriptures are included in OM. OM is the feminine symbol for everything. This world originates from OM, exists in OM, and dissolves into OM during the cosmic pralaya. Creation itself is set in motion by the vibrations of OM. 130
'Man' is used by Christians at the end of prayers. The word 'man' is used frequently in the Bible. Muslims use the word 'ahmen' when praying. "A men" and "Ahmeen" are all just variations of OM. OM are a matrix of all sounds. If you feel severe suffering or pain, repeating the long sound 'Hun' or 'Hun' will bring some relief. "Hun" or "Hun" is just a variation of OM. Hum is a partial utterance of OM that is interrupted by pain. When you feel pain, call on the Lord's name and pray for His mercy. Laughter is nothing but a repeated 'hum" sound. When a child cries or cries, they say things like 'un' or 'aung' and cry. 'Un' or 'aung' is just a variation of OM. The child's language organs are not fully developed, so he pronounces 'ohm' incomprehensibly. Children repeat God's name even when they cry. The laundry guy keeps saying, 'Hang up!' when he does the laundry. That gives him a sense of security. He does not feel tired or lethargic. He unconsciously repeats the name of God and draws strength, joy, peace and strength from within himself. The rumbling noise caused by flatulence in the intestines, the whistle of a railway locomotive, the rapids of a river, the sound of thunder, the howling of a goat, the roar of a lion, the sounds of mills and factories. Just OM. The sounds of landslides, strong gusts of wind, the hustle and bustle of the city, and the rain are just over whelming. It will now be clearly understood that one always calls on OM, the name of Lord or Brahman, consciously or unconsciously, in whole or in part. If he speaks emotionally with Bhava, he will soon understand his own essential divinity. All colors are in the center of the eye. All tastes are concentrated on the tongue. All touches are focused on the tongue. All touches are centered on the skin. All sounds are centered in the ear. All scents are 131
concentrated in the nose. All the senses are focused on the mind. All thoughts are focused on OM or Brahman, the Supreme Self, all support. The buzz of the bees, the sweet melody of the nightingale, the seven melodies of music (sa, le, ga, ma, pa, da, nee, sa), the mudanga and timpani, the lute and flute, the lion's roar, the lover's song, The neigh of a horse, the hiss of a cobra, the applause of the audience when a speaker delivers his final lecture, all these can only emanate from OM Kara. OM is the embodiment of the Vedas. 66 All languages and sounds come from Ohm. The essence of the four Vedas is only OM. A, U, M cover the full range of sound vibrations. "A" starts at the base of the tongue. 'U' starts in the middle. Finally, when you close your lips, you get an 'M'. Anyone who chants or repeats OM is actually repeating the scriptures of the entire world. OM is the source or womb of all religions and scriptures from different parts of the world. Oh, Amen and Amen are all one. They represent Truth, Brahman and the One Being. Without OM there is no worship. OM is saguna. Pranava or OM is the greatest of all mantras. It gives instant relief. All mantras begin with OM. All Upanisads begin with OM. Gayatri begins with OM. OM chants are recited before offerings are made to the various gods. The Archanas, namely Ashtari (108), Trisathi (300) and Sahasra (1000), are also preceded by Pranava. Oh no one can explain the greatness of his kara. Parvati, Adishesha and even the great sages could not explain the greatness of Pranava. Every sound has an ohm. OM is an auspicious characteristic of Sannyasins and Vedantins who are interested in spreading spiritual knowledge throughout the world. It is written on the front wall of every sannyasini asram. OM is used in the form of a call or address during prayer or supplication. OM is a persuasive 132
form of prayer that bestows certain blessings or virtues on those who recite it. If you are a believer in OM, please write OM first before trying it. So start with a letter. The habit of chanting 'OM and meditating on symbols increases one's inner strength. It has been given great importance in continuous practice since Vedic times. There is no discrimination regarding race, skin color, or any form of discrimination regarding practitioners. But you must commit to practicing regularly. 133
