Story of ձṣṭ

A ʰ貹پ. This ʰ貹پ was an asura also. (ūٲ 94, Anuvāka 14, Ѳṇḍ 1, Ṛgveḍa).

Birth.

There are contradictory statements in the ʳܰṇa regarding the birth of ձṣṭ.

(a) վś첹 got four sons named Ahirbudhnya, ձṣṭ Ჹ첹 and Rudra. The great ascetic վśū貹 was the son of ձṣṭ. (Chapter 15, ṃśa 1, վṣṇ ʳܰṇa).

(b) śⲹ貹 got as his sons the Ekādaśarudras of his wife Surabhi. Surabhi who became pure by penance got by the grace of Ѳ𱹲 five other sons named Aja, Ekapāt, Ahirbudhnya, ձṣṭ and Rudra. The noble and famous վśū貹 was the son of ձṣṭ. (Chapter 18, Agni ʳܰṇa).

(c) śⲹ貹 Ѳ󲹰ṣi got a son named ձṣṭ of his wife Aditi. (Śǰ첹 34, Chapter 226, Ādi Parva).

Because of such varied statements it is not possible to say whose son ձṣṭ was.

Indra’s enemy.

While վśū貹 was doing penance Indra killed him by his ղܻ. Enraged at this ձṣṭ produced another asura named ṛt to kill Indra. (See under ṛt). Indra killed ṛtܰ also. At last greatly disappointed ձṣṭ cursed Indra that he would suffer from Putraduḥkha (loss of son) and then went to the mount Meru to do penance.
