7. Festivals of Lord Jagannatha Temple
The Brahma and Skanda Puranas contain prescriptions about the observance of twelve festivals in the temple of Lord Jagannatha throughout the year. There is a saying in Orissa that there are 13 festivals in the 12 months of the year. .104 But there are more than 65 festivals of festive nitis during the year. Out of these, some of them are being given here. They are such as 1. Aksaya Trtiya (Candan Yatra); on the 3rd day of the bright fortnight of the month of Baisakha and lasts for 21 days - April - May, 2. Besides these yatras, a large number of other festivals and nitis are performed inside and outside of the temple premises. They are Balabhadra Janma, Krsna Janma, Ganesa Caturthi, rekha Pancami, Radhastami, Vamana Janma or Sunia, Ananta Caturdashi, Prathamastami, Bakula Amabasya, Rama Navami, Maha Visuba Sankranti, Kumara Purnima, Rasa Purnima, Pahili Bhoga, Sitala Sasti, Siva ratri, Deva Dipavali, Durga Puja, Tila Saptamii, Niladri Mahodaya etc. This is in brief about the details regarding the rituals & festivals of the Lord Jagannatha temple of Puri. It is known from the above discussion that the temple of Lord Jagannatha represents the best specimen of the full-fledged Kalinga Style temple architecture of Orissa. All the structures of the temple were not constructed in the same period. The sculptural activities of the temple started from the Ganga period and it was completed in the Gajapati period of Orissa history. This temple is excellently depicted with both types of sculptures, which are clearly mentioned above. The vimana or the main deula of the Jagannatha temple is devoid of erotic sculptures (scenes). Although a few erotic scenes or amorous couples are noticed in the walls of the other components (i.e. jagamohana and bhogamandapa) of the temple but vulgarity has been restrained. Due to the thick lime plaster in the jagamohana and natamandapa, the exact sculptures are not clearly visible to the outside. The vimana, bhogamandapa and gateways display the fine sculptures of the temple. The decorative ornaments of the vimana could be made possible after the deplastering by the Archaeological Survey of India; Bhubaneswar Circle in 1980's. Both from the architectural and sculptural point of view, the temple of Lord Jagannatha is a unique monument of Eastern India. In addition to the main Jagannatha temple, a good number of smaller and medium shrines belonging to the different pantheons of Hinduism also erected within the 120
inner as well as the outer enclosures of the temple complex. From the cultural point of view, the temple of Lord Jagannatha is one of the important shrines of India. It is not only famous as a holy place in India but its surrounding is also treated as grand and splendid in the whole of world.
