9. Rudra in the ղٳپīⲹ 󳾲ṇa

In the ղٳپīⲹ 󳾲ṇa, Rudra is said to be ʲśܲ Pati[1] as well as the slayer of animalsrudro’sya paśūnghātuka syāt.[2] Rudra is called Ծṣṭṛt. The cattle are protected from Rudra with dzṛg첹ṇṭ oblation.[3] A reference has been found where Rudra is described as ū峾󾱱貹پ and Tanticaro ṛṣ. Here, Rudra is supplicated not to harm their animals.[4] In the word ū峾󾱱貹پ, Bhaṭṭabhāskaramiśra comments that Rudra is the lord of beings. In connection with the word tanticaro vṛṣā, he gives two types of meanings. First one is one who resides in the ⲹñ and the second meaning is one who moves near the cord of animals or cattle.[5]

There is a reference in the ղٳپīⲹ 󳾲ṇa, where Rudra is connected with ṛt.[6]

Bhaṭṭabhāskaramiśra explains the relevant passage thus

hutaśeṣabhāgo hi sviṣṭakṛdādirūpo ܻ | yat 貹 tasmai hutamiti darśanāt | yameṣṭamiti vacanāt yamādeva tatopi dūrāt tāvat yo’ya mṛtyuprakāra tamavayajate nāśayati.[7]

Rudra’s close relation to cow has been found very clearly through a Brāhmaṇic passage. Here, it is said that cow is the proper sacrificial gift or 岹ṣiṇ of Rudra.[8] Rudra is delineated as the slayer of calf if the calf drinks milk from his mother after the ṃg period (ten nights from the birth of a calf).[9]

In this connection, Bhaṭṭabhāskaramiśra comments that

... ٲ saṃsṛṣṭadhaya homārthena dugdhena ṃsṛṣṭa pibanta daśarātrādūrdhvamapi kṛtsnapāyina rudro ghātuka hantukāma syāt.[10]
