This page relates ‘Weapons and War in Niti works� of the study on the Nitiprakasika by Vaisampayana which deals primarily with with Dhanurveda, i.e., the science of war, weapons and military strategies of ancient Indian society. Weapons and War in ±·Ä«³Ù¾± works

(i) °­²¹³Üá¹­i±ô²â²¹â€™s ´¡°ù³Ù³ó²¹Å›Äå²õ³Ù°ù²¹

°­²¹³Üá¹­i±ô²â²¹â€™s ´¡°ù³Ù³ó²¹Å›Äå²õ³Ù°ù²¹ epitomizes governance (artha). It elaborates in various sections about the political, economic as well as judicial ideas, policies, concepts and issues.

(ii) °­Äå³¾²¹²Ô»å²¹°ì²¹â€™s ±·Ä«³Ù¾±²õÄå°ù²¹

°­Äå³¾²¹²Ô»å²¹°ì²¹â€™s ±·Ä«³Ù¾±²õÄå°ù²¹ re-iterates the concepts of °­²¹³Üá¹­i±ô²â²¹â€™s ´¡°ù³Ù³ó²¹Å›Äå²õ³Ù°ù²¹. It effectively portrays political and military schemes. Åš³Ü°ì°ù²¹²ÔÄ«³Ù¾± also records interesting details on similar lines.

Åš³Ü°ì°ù²¹²ÔÄ«³Ù¾± dedicates one section each of the fourth chapter to durga, rÄjaká¹›tyÄni and sena. In these sections, subtle points regarding military science are recorded. The section on sena furnishes details on army composition, tips for the success of army, ethics of war, strategical considerations on and off the battle-field, training of the war-animals, divine and non-divine kind of weapons, foreign policy measures, battle-formations and the monetary benefits gained by the military personnel.

(iv) ³Õ²¹Å›¾±á¹£á¹­³ó²¹â€™s Dhanurveda

³Õ²¹Å›¾±á¹£á¹­³ó²¹â€™s Dhanurveda is a directory on weapons, especially the dhanu and ¾±á¹£u. It registers their details comprehensively and speaks about the manner in which the weapons are to be wielded.

(v) ²ÑÄå²Ô²¹²õ´Ç±ô±ôÄå²õ²¹

²ÑÄå²Ô²¹²õ´Ç±ô±ôÄå²õ²¹ (´¡²ú³ó¾±±ô²¹á¹£i³ÙÄå°ù³Ù³ó²¹³¦¾±²Ô³ÙÄå³¾²¹á¹‡i) -in the section on Åš²¹²õ³Ù°ù²¹-±¹¾±»å²âÄå±¹¾±²Ô´Ç»å²¹ speaks on the movements, manoeuvres of various weapons. The king usually exhibits his prowess in the °ì³ó³Ü°ù²¹±ôÄ« for the general public. During this occasion, he wields a host of weapons and demonstrates his skill.

(vi) Åš¾±±¹²¹³Ù²¹³Ù³Ù±¹²¹°ù²¹³Ù²ÔÄå°ì²¹°ù²¹

Åš¾±±¹²¹³Ù²¹³Ù³Ù±¹²¹°ù²¹³Ù²ÔÄå°ì²¹°ù²¹ also gives plenty of facts, nuances regarding war science. It talks at length about durga, bala, payment of military personnel, punishments for offenders, °ì³ó²¹á¸g²¹±ô²¹°ìá¹£aṇa[1], qualifications needed for the ²õ±ð²ÔÄå±è²¹³Ù¾±, ²¹á¹…g²¹°ù²¹°ìá¹£a°ì²¹²õ, á¹£ÄḲµ³Üṇy²¹, bravery award and rewards, battlefields suitable to army divisions and ±¹²âÅ«³ó²¹°ù²¹³¦²¹²Ô²¹. °ä²¹á¹‡á¸±ðÅ›±¹²¹°ù²¹â€™s ¸éÄåÂá²¹²ÔÄ«³Ù¾±-°ù²¹³Ù²ÔÄå°ì²¹°ù²¹ furnishes information on military directives for the king and strategical considerations concerning war.

(viii) ±·Ä«³Ù¾±±¹Äå²âÄ峾ṛt²¹

³§´Ç³¾²¹»å±ð±¹²¹²õ³Ü°ùī’s ±·Ä«³Ù¾±±¹Äå²âÄ峾ṛt²¹ devotes chapters titled ²õ²¹³¾³Ü»å»å±ðÅ›²¹ each to durga, bala, á¹£ÄḲµ³Üṇy²¹ and yuddha explaining related concepts. (p. 198-201; 207-15; 311-43; 344-72)

µþ³ó²¹á¹­á¹­²¹ ±·Ä«±ô²¹°ì²¹á¹‡á¹­³ó²¹â€™s ±·Ä«³Ù¾±³¾²¹²âÅ«°ì³ó²¹ records absorbing points regarding encampments. It echoes the views of other ±·Ä«³Ù¾± texts with regard to qualifications of ²õ±ð²ÔÄå±è²¹³Ù¾±; types of battle-arrays and their composition and war-ethics (p. 60-61).

(x) ÅšÄå°ùá¹…g²¹»å³ó²¹°ù²¹±è²¹»å»å³ó²¹³Ù¾±á¸�

ÅšÄå°ùá¹…g²¹»å³ó²¹°ù²¹±è²¹»å»å³ó²¹³Ù¾±á¸� presents exhaustive information regarding dhanu,¾±á¹£u along with particulars for the knowledge of the dhanurdhara. It also supplies information on few astras, army units, ±¹²âÅ«³ó²¹²õ as well as moral code of conduct for war. (verses 1736-38, 42-48, 62-67, 69-100; 1801-11, 14; 1829-84; 1911-23, 35-36).

(xi) ³§Äå³¾°ùÄåÂá²â²¹±ô²¹°ìá¹£mÄ«±èīṻ·¾±°ìÄå

³§Äå³¾°ùÄåÂá²â²¹±ô²¹°ìá¹£mÄ«±èīṻ·¾±°ìÄå, the emperor’s manual, allocates separate chapters to give details on forts (31. 7-27; 32. 2-8; 33. 1-16; 34. 1-22), »å²¹á¹‡á¸²¹²âÄå³Ù°ùÄå, different army corps, appointments of military recruits, different kinds of bows and arrows along with their practice and exercise. It finally enlightens about the armed crusade that can be undertaken against foreign nations (134. 4-33; 135. 4-56; 136. 1-71; 137. 1-122)
