Worship involving Idols

Worship is offered to the goddess in concrete form of idols. Idols are called as Pratima in Sanskrit. There are certain guidelines and rules for carving the Pratimas of the various deities laid down in the book of sculpture or Silpasastra.

Worship & worshipper A note on Specification regarding use of idols - 320 The Sri-vidyarnava-tantra 1 quoting the authority of the Kapilapancaratra text states that the pratima of the goddess which is ritually established in the house should not be large. The idol should necessarily be ten to fifteen angulas in height it should not exceed than the specified limit. An important note is mentioned in the Matrikabheda-tantra 20 regard the methodology of the usage of different invocatory mediums such as the Puspayantra, a ghata, a jewel, a yantra, an Idol is as follows. The Puspa-yantra is the best and bestows every thing. If the goddess is invoked on the following mediums such as a salagrama, a jewel, an idol the sadhaka should not use a yantra. A ghatta alone should be used as the medium for invoking the goddess in an idol. The sadhaka if by mistake or in a state of swoon uses a yantra he then has to offer all worship twice, offerings including animalsacrifice twice.
