Guidelines for the selection of land for a temple can be found in the Vi峁ａ箛udharmottarapur膩峁嘺, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy.鈥擨n the Vi峁ａ箛udharmottarapur膩峁嘺, a strict guideline is seen for the selection of land for a temple. The examination of land is strongly recommended in the Mayamata also. According to the Vi峁ａ箛udharmottarapur膩峁嘺, the land for temple should be accompanied with the sources of water and the temple should be made on the left side or in front of that reservoir of water. Islands are regarded as the best sites for temples by the Vi峁ａ箛udharmottarapur膩峁嘺 as they are surrounded by water. [...] Moreover, some inauspicious places are to be totally discarded for choosing a site for temple construction.
