CONCLUSION
It is known from the extant monuments that the temple building
activities of Purusottama kᚣetra started from the 10th century AD and it continued
till the 17th century AD. Some temples of the kᚣetra were also built in the 19th
century AD. There are a good number of temples noticed in the different parts of
the kᚣetra. The kᚣetra of Purusottama is one of the important cultural sites of
India. The sanctity of the kᚣetra exists from the prehistoric perio�. In the
MahÄbhÄrata Vanaparva, the kᚣetra of Purusottama has been mentioned as the
place of YajĂąa vedi, which situated near the sea in Kalinga i.e. present Puri town.
The glory and sanctity of Lord Purusottama and its kᚣetra also find mention in
many works like Matsya PurÄáša, Kapila SaášhitÄ, NiḡÄdrÄŤ Mahodaya, Utkaḡa
Khanda of Skanda PurÄáša etc.
The kᚣetra of Purusottama is a heaven on earth and both the devotees
and pleasure seekers bestow such praise on this place. The biggest temple of
Lord Jagannatha is situated here and for centuries Puri has been an important
centre of Brahminical religion. The PurÄášas and other ancient Sanskrit texts refer
to this holy city variously as NiḡÄcala, NilagirÄŤ, Purusottama kᚣetra, ĹrÄŤkᚣetra,
Sankha kᚣetra, Divya kᚣetra and DasavatÄra kᚣetra. Among these ancient names,
Purusottama kᚣetra is very famous in Eastern India. The inhabitants of kᚣetra
(Puri) are the worshippers of the PancadevatÄs namely Ĺiva, Viᚣášu, DurgÄ, Surya
and GaneĹa. Therefore, temples of gods and goddesses of various sects are
erected in the different parts of the kᚣetra.
The popularity of the kᚣetra increased after the construction of grand
temple of Lord Purusottama by Ananta Varman Coá¸aganga Deva, the founder of
the Ganga dynasty in Utkaḡa territory. Besides the temple of Lord JagannÄtha,
there are a number of other temples (both smaller and medium sizes) also erected
in the different parts of the kᚣetra. The place of Puri (Purusottama kᚣetra) is
famous for its historic antiquities and religious sanctuaries in India. The extant
temples of the kᚣetra represent the various branches of the Kalinga Style of
architecture and they attract tourists, historians, archaeologists and architects
from all over India and abroad.
