This Study deals with the History, Culture and Antiquities of Tamralipta: an ancient city-port and important Trade centre with a rich history of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Tamralipta corresponds to the modern Tamluk, situated in West Bengal (India) and witnessed prosperous times during the Gupta dynasty.

AN EROTIC COUPLE ( C. 2nd century B.C.)

This terracotta plaque (Fig.- 19) represents a sexual scene
of an aristocratic couple seated on a well-decorated chair. "It
bears a most sophisticated urban touch of the Kamakala known to
the contemporary nagarakas and their nayikÄs as also the courtesans
recognised for their lure of beauty and uninhibited love. The
plaque depicts a scene of coitus evertus in a sitting posture on
a chair which will recall the vaiparitya maithuna as mentioned

by VÄtsyÄyana. Erotic scenes are not lacking in the terracotta
art of Tamluk. A mutilated specimen (Acc. No. 33) preserved in
T.M.R.C. depicts a female who is embraced by a male from her back
whose hands are lying on the two arms of the female. The female
figure has well developed breasts and a fleshy abdomen. She stands
in balcony and wears ornaments.

This mutilated terracotta plaque (Fig.-20) preserves the
upper part of a dancing male who stands in a tribhanga posture and
is adorned with various ornaments. The speciality of this figure
is the circular head-dress having ornamental uprights attached
with tassels. These features of this fragmentary figure throws
light on the life of the rich.
