This Study deals with the History, Culture and Antiquities of Tamralipta: an ancient city-port and important Trade centre with a rich history of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Tamralipta corresponds to the modern Tamluk, situated in West Bengal (India) and witnessed prosperous times during the Gupta dynasty.

33 This is another specimen of yakshini on a terracotta plaque
(Fig. 16). This smiling figure wears various ornaments including
magical hair-pins, circular ear-rings, a beaded collar and a
garland.

This is a mould of a winged yaksha (Fig.-17) standing in
a frontal pose and wearing elaborate head-dresses and various
jewellery such as ear-rings, neck-collar and bangles. This male
figure is represented as standing by equally balancing on his
feet (samapada sthanaka) and he holds lotus stalks with full
bloomed lotuses in his both hands which are resting on his waist.
Two outstretched wings are shown behind his shoulders. On the basis
of the association of lotuses with this figure Mr. P.C. Dasgupta
reminds us of the story of Apannaka Jātaka (No. 1) in which a
certain crafty yaksha is said to have been richly adorned with
34 fresh lotuses. Dr. S.S. Biswas thinks this figure as an early
proto-type of Surya as many images of Surya of mediaeval period
holding stalks of two full-bloomed lotuses in his two hands have
