It was an obligation on the author to define his idea of
अलिंगो लिंगमूलन्त� अव्यक्तं लिंगमुच्यत� �
अलिङ्ग� शि� इत्युक्त� लिंग� शैवमित� स्मृतम� � � �
प्रधान� प्रकृतिश्चेत� यदाहुलिंगमुत्तमम� � �
विग्रह� जगता� लिंगमलिंगादभवत�
स्वयम् ॥। � �

aliṅga� ś ityukto ṃg� śaivamiti smṛtam || 1 ||
pradhāna� ṛtśceti yadāhuṃgmuttamam | 2
vigraho jagatā� ṃgmaliṃgādabhavat

The Unmanifest Principle is e and the manifest Universe
(Pradhāna) is लिंग [ṃg] ; Prakriti is लिंग [ṃg ] and शि� [ś ] is अलिं�, � [aṃg, � ] such was
the basic metaphysical position of the Mahesvara or Pasupata
school. प्रकृत� [ṛt ] is the consort or शक्त� [śپ ] of शि� [ś ] and पुरु� [ܰṣa ] or शि� [ś ] himself
is लिंग�-
प्रकृतिस्तस्� पत्नी � पुरुषो लिंगमुच्यत� �

ṛtstasya patnī ca puruṣo ṃgmucyate |
(] I. 75. 9)
As explained in the Mbh. the is the object of senses
and the अव्यक्� [avyakta ] is called लिंग�
इन्द्रियैः सृज्यत� यद� यत� तत� तद� व्यक्तमिति स्मृतम� �

विज्ञेयं
लिंगग्राह्यमतीन्द्रियम� �

indriyai� sṛjyate yad yat tat tad vyaktamiti smṛtam |
avyaktamiti

ṃggrāhyamatīndriyam ||

] It is the power of अलिं� [aṃg ] which transforms its लिंग [ṃg ] mani-
festation into 7, 8, or 11 different forms, which was an obvious
reference to the Seven Prānas, or Eight Murtis of Śiva (called the
Eight Names of Kumāra in the Brāhmaṇas and the Purāṇas), or
the Eleven Rudras:
सप्तधा चाष्टध� चै� तथैकादशध� पुनः �
लिंगान्यलिंगस्� तथ� मायय� विततान� � � ( [saptadhā cāṣṭadhā caiva tathaikādaśadhā puna� |
liṃgānyaṃgsya tathā māyayā vitatāni ca || (] I, 3, 5)
Whatever be the varying number of Tattvas ( सृष्ट्यारम्भ�
पदार्थ [ṛṣṭy첹
貹ٳ] s) in earlier literature, the Purānas synthesize them into three
categories which they designate as त्रिदेवः-

] 1 तेभ्यः प्रधानदेवाना� त्रयमासीच्छिवात्मकम् �
[tebhya� pradhānadevānā� trayamāsīcchivātmakam |
