ten Pur膩峁嘺s as describing the greatness of 艢iva, four of Brahma and
two each of Devi and Hari.2 28
The Puranas are not unanimous on this division. For instance,
among the S膩ttvika Pur膩峁嘺s, the Padma Pur膩峁嘺 29 omits Matsya,
K奴rma and V膩yu which are replaced by N膩rada, Padma and Var膩ha,
retains only the Bh膩gavata, Vi峁ａ箛u and Garu岣峚 of the Garu岣峚 list.
Among the R膩jasa Pur膩峁嘺s, the Padma Pur膩峁嘺 retains only
the V膩mana Pur膩峁嘺, but leaves out Skanda, Padma, Var膩ha and
Agni from the R膩jasa list which are replaced by Brahm膩峁囜笉a,
Brahma, Brahmvaivarta, M膩rka峁囜笉eya and Bhavi峁a. Among the
T膩masa Pur膩峁嘺s, Padma retains only the Linga Pur膩峁嘺 but omits
Brahm膩峁囜笉a, Brahmavaivarta, Brahma M膩rka峁囜笉eya and Aditya of
the Garu岣峚 list. Instead, it includes Matsya, K奴rma, 艢iva, Skanda,
Agni. Thus, we find that there is confusion in this kind of
classification which becomes more complicated by the statement of
Skanda Pur膩峁嘺 which assigns ten Pur膩峁嘺s to 艢iva, four to Brahma,
two each to Dev墨 and Vi峁ａ箛u.
