Shaivacintamani (analytical study)

This page relates ‘Description of Rameshvara linga� of the English study on the Shaivacintamani—an unstudied text on Shaiva or Shiva worship by Lakshmidhara Mishra, written in the late 17th century and edited for the first time in 1994 by Shri Dukhisyam Pattanaik from the Orissa State Museum. The present research aims to offer a comprehensive study of the Saivacintamani, filling the knowledge gap by being the first to provide in-depth analysis and commentary.

Part 4.7 - Description of 峾ś ṅg

The importance of 峾ś ṅg temple was being written in Skanda mythology. It is also one of the twelve Jyotirṅg temples. 峾ٳ󲹲峾ī Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Ś located on 峾ś� island in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. This Jyotirṅg was being established by Sri Ramachandra himself. The 峾ś 峾ī [Rameshwar Swami] temple was situated 1000ft length and 650ft breadth and at a height of 150ft. Many sculptures on the walls of temple, Nandheeśvara, silver choriot, and golden roof of the temple are the important one’s to be seen. There are nearly 1200 pillars around the temple and 23 īٳ󲹲 (laks) are found. As this temple is located on the sea coast, that sea considered as 24th īٳ people coming from northern India will make �ṣe첹� (bath) to lord Ś here with Ҳṅg water and sand in Rāmeśvar is taken and melted is Ҳṅg river. It is one of 274 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where the three of the most revered nayanars (Śaivite saints), appar, sundarar and tirugnana sambandar, have glorified the temple with their songs.

History

The temple was expanded during the 12th century by Pandya Dynasty, and its principal shrines sanctum were renovated by jayaveera Cinkaiariyan and his successor Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan of the Jaffna kingdom. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India. The temple is located in 峾ś� considered a holy pilgrimage site for Śaivites, ղṣṇٱ and Smarthas.

According to Epics

The presiding deity, the ṅg� of 峾ś (Ś), was established and worshiped by before crossing his bridge to ṅk. In �Trethayuga� after killing Rāvaṇāsura, Sri 峾 with his wife ī came �Gandhamadhanamountain by �ʳṣp첹 Բ�. The saints adviced Sri Rama that, on killing 屹ṇa who was the son of Pulasthya Brahma he will be sinned. So to get our of that sin, they adviced him to established a Śṅg and should worship it so that all sins will be cleared.

Then Śī峾 ordered Hanuman to get a Śṅg from . Then Hanuman stated his journey towards . Then Hanuman stated his journey towards �. But in meanwhile as time reached for establishment, Śī峾 established Śṅg made of mud by the hands of ī. At the final stage of establishment Hanuman came there with Śṅg. But at that time the establishment programme was completed. Thus Hanuman felt very sad. Then 峾 tried to convinced him but he cannot able to take out hanuman from sorrow.

Then 峾 said to Hanuman that “Dear ᲹԳܳ, the establishment of idol was completed. If you does like it uproot it and establish the ṅg which you have brought. On hearing that words of Śī峾, ᲹԳܳ became very happy and went to uproot the Śṅg. But even though it was made of mud he cannot lift it and become unconscious. Then Śī峾 went to Hanuman and awaked him and said “my ᲹԳܳ, as this idol was established no one can lift it. If you want your idol the establish it will done beside it “and established Śṅg which was brought by ᲹԳܳ was established by Śī峾 was called “峾ś� and the idol established near to the idol established by Śī峾. The idol established by Śī峾 was called �峾ś� and the idol brought by ᲹԳܳ was called ᲹԳܳś� and became very famous.

The primary deity of the temple is 峾ś (Ś) in the from of ṅgm. There are two ṅgmas inside the sanctum–one built by 峾, from sand, residing as the main deity, 峾ṅg� and the one brought by ᲹԳܳ from called Viśvaṅgm. 峾 instructed that the Viśvaṅg� should be worshipped first since it was brought by ᲹԳܳ-the tradition continues even today.

ŚLiṅga as located on the near by mountains which were being established by Vībhiṣaṇa and others. Also �Բܳī� was very famous and people who visit who visit 峾ś� will definitely visit this �Բܳī�.
