by G. D. Jayalakshmi | 2019 | 58,344 words

This page relates ‘Analysis of Rupaka-alankara of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

Metaphoric expressions are found throughout the text; but the opening verse of the seventh Act is a splendid example for Rūpakālaṅkāra. King ī is all in praise of the efforts of վñԲ Ś, his minister, in vanquishing the enemy powers. What has been achieved by the minister is normally considered to be impossible since the hurdles to be crossed over had been too many.

Considering the magnitude of thesuccess, the king expresses his appreciation in a metaphoric speech–by the power of the boat of intelligence (پ첹śԲܲ) (of the minister), the terrific ocean of battle-field (ṇāmܻ) with all the whales of diseases (rogavraja timiṅgilatām) spread about has been safely crossed (VII.1):
