This page relates ‘Analysis of Bibhatsa-rasa of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

This sentiment creates disgust and detestation. This ill feeling further creates aversion and hatred. Ānandarāya Makhin handles this rasa in the selected and suitable occasions:

(i) In the second Act of this play, the author chooses to highlight the ī󲹳ٲ rasa through the dialogues of diseases like ṣṭ󲹲, ś, Pramehas and Gulma-Plīhāṇas. This is possible because each one of these four groups, describes himself in such a way which naturally creates aversion in the minds of the viewers.

For instance, the ṣṭ󲹲 declare (II.14cd) that on entering the city (body) they would make it abhorrent even to look at:

śٰ śⲹ puramīkṣitumapyayogya kurmo ⲹ tanubhṛtāmatikutsanīyam ||

(ii) Pramehas, take a step further by saying that they will dry up the city which has the secretions of blood, flesh, fat, bone and fluids of bone marrows (II.18ab; p.95):

prasrāvākhyā pariṇatimasṛṅmāṃsamedo'sthimajjā-svātanvanto vayamanudina tatpura śoṣayāma |

(iii) The poet continues to employ this ī󲹳ٲ in the sixth Act also where the fearful war between the two armies is reported (VI. 43 ab):

ābhimukhamavekṣamāṇa śaśarudhirāliptatanumima...... ||

The description of the disease ղⲹṅg as one who is looking straight and having his body smeared with rabbit’s blood itself creates an aversion in the minds of the viewers.
