Ashta Nayikas and Dance Forms (study)

This page relates ‘Divisions of Svadhinapatika of the study dealing with the Ashta-Nayikas—a classification of eight kinds of “Heroines representing the eight emotional states (avastha) employed in the classical Indian dance and performing arts (otherwise known as Natya Shastra). These Ashtanayikas reflect the eight types of romantic relationships and have hence formed the expressive subject of many classical painting, poems and dramatic plays.

Part 4 - Divisions of ³§±¹Äå»å³óÄ«²Ô²¹±è²¹³Ù¾±°ìÄå
Dhanika, in his Avaloka of »å²¹Å›²¹°ùÅ«±è²¹°ì²¹³¾ mentions that the ²¹±¹²¹²õ³Ù³óÄå of ³§±¹Äå»å³óÄ«²Ô²¹±è²¹³Ù¾±°ìÄå is not for ±Ê²¹°ù²¹°ìÄ«²âÄå and ³§Äå³¾Äå²Ô²âÄå[1]. But this is not justified as it is also possible for a ±Ê²¹°ù²¹°ìÄ«²âÄå or a ³§Äå³¾Äå²Ô²âÄå to have a faithful lover. Ajamila from µþ³óÄå²µ²¹±¹²¹³Ù²¹±è³Ü°ùÄåṇa (5th ³§°ìÄå²Ô»å²¹); who was attached to a »åÄå²õ¾± is an apt example.
Śṛṅ²µÄå°ù²¹³¾²¹Ã±Âá²¹°ùÄ« criticizes the classification of a ³§±¹Äå»å³óÄ«²Ô²¹±è²¹³Ù¾±°ìÄå into ¶Ù³óÄ«°ù²¹, ´¡»å³óÄ«°ù²¹ and so on. It further states that any anger shown by a ³§±¹Äå»å³óÄ«²Ô²¹±è²¹³Ù¾±°ìÄå is not real and is only feigned. As the moment the ²ÔÄå²â²¹°ì²¹ cheats on her, he seizes to be an â€´¡²Ô³Ü°ìÅ«±ô²¹ ±·Äå²â²¹°ì²¹â€ and her anger due to his infidelity makes her a °³ó²¹á¹‡á¸¾±³ÙÄå ²ÔÄå²â¾±°ìÄå. This seems a very valid argument as a ¶Ù³óÄ«°ùÄå is opposite to a ³§±¹Äå»å³óÄ«²Ô²¹±è²¹³Ù¾±°ìÄå by nature.
Thus, it can be concluded that ³§±¹Äå»å³óÄ«²Ô²¹±è²¹³Ù¾±°ìÄå has only five major divisions (apart from the ones newly introduced by Śṛṅ²µÄå°ù²¹³¾²¹Ã±Âá²¹°ùÄ«) namelyâ€
- ²Ñ³Ü²µ»å³óÄå,
- ²Ñ²¹»å³ó²âÄå and
- ±Ê°ù²¹²µ²¹±ô²ú³óÄå in ³§±¹Ä«²âÄå;
- ±Ê²¹°ù²¹°ìÄ«²âÄå and
- ³§Äå³¾Äå²Ô²âÄå.
