Story of ´¡á¹ƒÅ›a

A sage of the family of ²Ñ²¹°ùÄ«³¦¾±.

Genealogy.

He was descended from ³Õ¾±á¹£á¹‡³Ü through µþ°ù²¹³ó³¾Äå, ²Ñ²¹°ùÄ«³¦¾± and °­²¹Å›²â²¹±è²¹.

Birth.

²Ñ²¹°ùÄ«³¦¾± was one of the six sons, all ṛṣis, of µþ°ù²¹³ó³¾Äå. These six sons, born parthogenetically of µþ°ù²¹³ó³¾Äå, were: ²Ñ²¹°ùÄ«³¦¾±, ´¡á¹…g¾±°ù²¹²õ, Atri, Pulastya, Pulaha and Kratu. ²Ñ²¹°ùÄ«³¦¾± had a son named °­²¹Å›²â²¹±è²¹. °­²¹Å›²â²¹±è²¹ married the thirteen daughters of ¶Ù²¹°ìá¹£a. The eldest of them, Aditi, gave birth to twelve sons ¶Ù³óÄå³ÙÄå, Aryaman, Mitra, Åš²¹°ì°ù²¹, ³Õ²¹°ù³Üṇa, ´¡á¹ƒÅ›a, Bhaga, ³Õ¾±±¹²¹²õ±¹Äå²Ô, ±Êūṣa²Ô, ³§²¹±¹¾±³ÙÄå, °Õ±¹²¹á¹£á¹­Äå and ³Õ¾±á¹£á¹‡³Ü. ´¡á¹ƒÅ›a is one of these twelve sons who have been called the twelve Ä€»å¾±³Ù²â²¹²õ. (See Chapter 65 of Ä€di Parva of the ²Ñ²¹³óÄå²ú³óÄå°ù²¹³Ù²¹).

Events.

The ²Ñ²¹³óÄå²ú³óÄå°ù²¹³Ù²¹ says (Åš±ô´Ç°ì²¹ 66, Chapter 123) that ´¡á¹ƒÅ›a was present at the time of Arjuna’s birth when several devas had come there to see the infant. In Åš±ô´Ç°ì²¹ 34, Chapter 45 of Åš²¹±ô²â²¹ Parva it is said that ´¡á¹ƒÅ›a was present on the occasion of the ´¡²ú³ó¾±á¹£e°ì²¹ of Skandadeva. ´¡á¹ƒÅ›a is said to have presented to Skandadeva five good warriors: Parigha, ³Õ²¹á¹­a, µþ³óÄ«³¾²¹, Dahana and Dahati.
