19. Āṣe貹

निषेधो वक्तुम� इष्टस्� यो विशेषाभिधित्सय� � १०.१०६cd �
वक्ष्यमाणोक्�-विषय� � आक्षेप� द्विधा मत� � ।१�.१०७ab �

niṣedho vaktum ṣṭⲹ yo viśeṣābhidhitsayā || 10.106cd ||
vakṣyamāṇokta-viṣaⲹ� sa ākṣepo dvidhā ٲ� || |10.107ab ||

Ծṣe�—t negation (an apparent negation); vaktum—to be said; ṣṭⲹ—of what is desired; ⲹ�—which [negation]; śṣa—a special [sense] (implied sense); 󾱻󾱳ٲ—out of a desire to express; ṣyṇa—is what was about to be said; ukta—or is what was said (or is being said); viṣaⲹ�—its scope; —t󲹳; ṣe貹�—t ornament called ṣe貹; dvidhā—tɴǴڴDZ; ٲ�—is considered.

When, for the purpose of conveying some special implied sense, there is a suppression of something intended to be said, that is ṣe貹 (hinting by negating) (paralipsis). It has two varieties: Either what is about to be said is suppressed or what was said is suppressed.

Commentary:

Mammaṭa says that in ṣe貹 the special sense intended to be expressed is an implied sense that is either very well-known or impossible to be said.[1] The ṣe貹 ornament is yet another ornament which inherently includes a second-rate implied sense. Often the implied sense falls in the category called ūḍh (not subtle) (5.2). Here the term ṣe貹 is used in the sense of “implying�, yet often the other meaning of ṣe貹 (rebuke) is also meant to be conveyed.
