vratena p膩pa峁� pracch膩dya kurvan str墨艣奴dradambhanam || 198 ||Having committed a sin, he shall not perform penance un der the pretext of doing a righteous act,鈥攄eceiving women and 艢奴dras by thus covering his sin by a penance.鈥�(198)
Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (尘补苍耻产丑腻峁补):
鈥�Having committed a sin, he shall not perform a penance,鈥欌�攊n the shape of an expiatory rite;鈥斺��under the pretext of doing a righteous act;鈥欌�攑retending righteousness, he makes it known among people that he is doing the penance purely as a religious act., and that there has been no occasion for his doing it as an expiatory rite; though, in reality, he is doing it as an expiatory rite. This is what one should not do.
鈥�By covering sin,鈥欌�攂y concealing his sin鈥攐ne shall not鈥攂y means of the said righteous act鈥攕eek to deceive 鈥�women and 艢奴dras.鈥�
The meaning is that, when one has to perforin an expiatory rite, one shall openly perform it as such, except in the case of the Expiatory Rites distinctly laid down as 鈥榮ecret鈥欌��(198).
