na codake nir墨k峁ta svar奴pamiti dh膩ra峁嚹� || 38 ||He shall not step over the rope to which a calf is tied; he shall not run when it is raining; he shall not look at his own figure in water; such is the established rule.鈥�(38).
Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (尘补苍耻产丑腻峁补):
鈥�痴补迟蝉补迟补苍迟谤墨鈥� is the rope to which the calf is tethered; or, it may mean 鈥榓 line of calves.鈥� This 鈥�he shall not step over鈥欌�� not cross over. Says Gautama (9.52)鈥斺�極ne shall not pass over the 惫补迟蝉补迟补苍迟谤墨.鈥�
鈥�Figure鈥欌�攕hape of the body.
鈥�Own鈥欌�� The addition of this implies that looking at the figure of other persons is not forbidden.
鈥�Such is the established rule,鈥欌�攐rdained in the scriptures鈥�(38).
Explanatory notes by Ganganath Jha
This verse is quoted in 厂补峁僺办腻谤补尘补测奴办丑补 (p. 71), which explains 鈥�惫补迟蝉补迟补苍迟谤墨鈥� as 鈥榯he rope to which a calf is tied鈥�, and quotes Haradatta to the effect that 鈥�vatsa鈥� here stands for the entire bovine species.
