Medh膩tithi鈥檚 commentary (尘补苍耻产丑腻峁补):
鈥�Of all Austerity,鈥�i.e. Breath-control, silence, observances, self-control, and the busts of 鈥�碍峁沜肠丑谤补, 颁丑腻苍诲谤腻 测补峁嘺, and also absolute Fasting鈥�;鈥攐f all this 鈥楢usterity,鈥� Right Behaviour is 鈥�the root,鈥欌�攖he direct cause, leading to the growth of their fruit.鈥擣or the reason given, the sages regarded, accepted, it as being the root,鈥�i.e. the cause,鈥攐f Austerity, performed by men desiring results.鈥斺��Having seen that virtue is got at,鈥欌赌攁肠辩耻颈谤别诲鈥斺赌�from Right Behaviour.鈥欌�擧owever difficult the Austerity performed, it is not fruitful for the man that is without Right Behaviour so says the 艢谤耻迟颈.鈥�(111).
