վᲹś (Saṃgameśvara) is the name of a temple at Paṭṭadakal in the Karnāṭa-drāviḍa style.—We know from the inscription 28 of Jñānaśivācārya that it was founded by Vijayāditya (696-733): “a great temple of stone has been established by King Vijayāditya holder of such titles;... of this Lord վᲹś.... That gives the original name of the deity. We do not know when the name Saṃgameśvara came in current usage. That inscription thus gives an indication to the period of construction of the monument, i.e. the reign of Vijayāditya. And it asserts the royal character of the foundation.
