General definition (in Hinduism)
: archive.org: Vedic index of Names and Subjects厂奴苍耻 (啶膏啶ㄠ) is a common word for 鈥榮on鈥 from the Rigveda onwards. The etymological sense seems to be he who is borne,鈥 and then 鈥榯he begotten鈥. But the use of 厂奴苍耻 in the Rigveda is predominantly in relation to the father, and only rarely in its connexion with words for mother. Thus a father is 鈥榚asy of access鈥 (蝉奴辫腻测补苍补) to his son (蝉奴苍耻); but in another passage, where the same term is applied to earth as a mother, the word used for son is Putra. No conclusion as to matriarchy can of course be drawn from the etymology. On the relation of son and father, see 笔颈迟峁.
