: Journal of South Asian Intellectual History: Samarasi峁僪a and the Early Transmission of T膩jika Astrology艢补谤墨谤腻诲丑颈办腻谤补 (啶多ぐ啷�啶班ぞ啶оた啶曕ぞ啶�) (lit. 鈥渞egarding the body鈥�) is the name of the eighth chapter of the 碍补谤尘补辫谤补办腻艣补鈥攐ne of the earliest preserved Sanskrit works on Perso-Arabic (T膩jika) astrology authored by Samarasi峁僪a in the 13th century.鈥� Chapter 8 (艣补谤墨谤腻诲丑颈办腻谤补) details the physical characteristics of a native on the basis of the ruler of the (ascending?) decan. While the descriptions of the seven planets (largely a reiteration of 2.6鈥�8) are too general for their source to be positively identified, the material is not based on the works of Sahl or Ab奴 Bakr already discussed. The text (8.1) states that it is taken from 鈥榊avana鈥� or possibly 鈥榯he Yavanas鈥�; the order in which the planets are presented, from Saturn to the moon, confirms an extra-Indian origin.
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
