: archive.org: Naisadhacarita of SriharsaSaptatantu (啶膏お啷嵿い啶むえ啷嵿い啷�) refers to a 鈥渟acrifice鈥�, and is mentioned in the Nai峁dha-carita 11.100.鈥擳he word literally means 鈥渢hat which has seven tantus鈥�, but the meaning of tantu is not clear. According to K峁Ｄ玶asv膩min, the reference is to the seven metres (鈥�saptabhi岣� chandobhistanyata iti鈥�). Hemacandra he explains the seven tantus also as the seven varieties of the Soma sacrifice [...].
S膩ya峁嘺 in his commnetary on 峁歡veda 10.124.1 gives two explanations of the word [saptatantu].
According to one, the reference is to thee seven varieties of the Soma sacrifice:
- 础驳苍颈峁ａ弓辞尘补,
- 础迟测补驳苍颈峁ａ弓辞尘补,
- Ukthya,
- 峁岣峚艣颈苍,
- 痴腻箩补辫别测补,
- 础迟颈谤腻迟谤补,
- 础辫迟辞谤测腻尘补.
The other explanation is the more probable. Tantu means here 鈥渙ne who extends鈥�, and organiser, i.e. the officiating priest. The word is used in this sense in Bh膩gavata 4.24.37, [...]. The word is used in this sense also in Bh膩gavata 3.19.28 (addressed to the Var膩ha incarnation of Vi峁ａ箛u). Here tantu clearly means 惫颈蝉迟腻谤补办补, though the commentator says 鈥�akhilayaj帽膩n膩峁� tantave vist膩r膩ya k膩ra峁嚹亂eti v膩鈥�. Here, too, it would be more natural to take the word in the same sense as in the other passage. Saptatantu thus means 鈥渢hat which has seven organisers i.e. priests鈥�. The seven priests are enumerated in Taittir墨ya-膩ra峁噛aka 3.5 in connetion with the Saptahot峁沵antra. Cf. S膩ya峁嘺.
In the Nai峁dhacarita vere in question the word saptatantu means at first sight 鈥渟even-threaded鈥� (see footnote to translation), but the ordinary meaning of tantu 鈥渢hread鈥� does not seam to have anything to do with a sacrifice. Hemacandra, it is true, says in one of his explanations that 鈥渢he seven threads鈥� are the cords with which the sacrificial animal is tied, but he does not quote any authority in support of this. In the verse of our poem, the alternative meaning 鈥渟even-threaded鈥� is mere word-play or 艣补产诲补肠肠丑补濒补 employed for the purpose of Virodh膩bh膩sa or apparent contradiction. A similar word-play is found in J膩nak墨hara峁嘺 6.34.
