ʲṛtٲ (पलवृत्�) refers to a “verse consisting of sixty long syllables�.—In his commentary on the Āryabhaṭīya, Bhāskara I explains that the time taken to utter sixty long syllables (ܰ-ṣa) is one ḍi, and then cites the first of our three verses which consists exactly of sixty long syllables. ‘Pala� being a synonym of ḍi, 貹ṛtٲ designates a verse consisting of sixty long syllables, the reciting of which takes one pala of time, i.e. twenty-four seconds.
