: Google Books: Studies in the History of the Exact Sciences (Astronomy)ʲṛtٲ (पलवृत्�) refers to a “verse consisting of sixty long syllables�.—In his commentary on the Āryabhaṭīya, Bhāskara I explains that the time taken to utter sixty long syllables (ܰ-ṣa) is one ḍi, and then cites the first of our three verses which consists exactly of sixty long syllables. ‘Pala� being a synonym of ḍi, 貹ṛtٲ designates a verse consisting of sixty long syllables, the reciting of which takes one pala of time, i.e. twenty-four seconds.

Jyotisha (ज्योति�, dzپṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy� or “Vedic astrology� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
