Orpiment is denoted by the Sanskrit term Harit and represents one of the materials used to make Colours in the ancient Indian tradition of Painting (citra), according to the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy. In the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, various materials are seen to be used to make colours. e.g., Orpiment (󲹰). Also, five colours are regarded as the primary ones, (viz., white, yellow, colour of vilomata, black, dark blue.). A painter can create hundreds or thousands of colours by amalgamating the primary colours.

Orpiment is known in Sanskrit as Āla, which is used in a recipe for the subjugation elephants, according to the 15th century Matangalila composed by Nilakantha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient  India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 10, “on the catching of elephants”]: �10. He shall apply (to the cows) a subjugating ointment made of [including for example, Orpiment�, ...] and similar things; with Celosia cristata, (cardamoms?), collyrium, 岵ṣp (name of various plants), and honey.
