Orpiment is denoted by the Sanskrit term Harit腻濒补 and represents one of the materials used to make Colours in the ancient Indian tradition of Painting (citra), according to the Vi峁ａ箛udharmottarapur膩峁嘺, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy. In the Vi峁ａ箛udharmottarapur膩峁嘺, various materials are seen to be used to make colours. e.g., Orpiment (丑补谤颈迟腻濒补). Also, five colours are regarded as the primary ones, (viz., white, yellow, colour of vilomata, black, dark blue.). A painter can create hundreds or thousands of colours by amalgamating the primary colours.

Orpiment is known in Sanskrit as 膧la, which is used in a recipe for the subjugation elephants, according to the 15th century Matangalila composed by Nilakantha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.鈥擺Cf. chapter 10, 鈥渙n the catching of elephants鈥漖: 鈥�10. He shall apply (to the cows) a subjugating ointment made of [including for example, Orpiment鈥�腻濒补, ...] and similar things; with Celosia cristata, 尘腻濒别测补 (cardamoms?), collyrium, 苍腻驳补辫耻峁补 (name of various plants), and honey.
