- mental placement,
- continuous placement,
- patched placement,
- close placement,
- taming the mind,
- pacification of the mind,
- complete pacification,
- one-pointed attention, and
- balanced placement.
The Nine Ways of Resting the Mind are known in Tibetan as sems gnas pa'i thabs dgu.—Whatever the object of our meditation, we pass through nine stages in the development of shamatha.

- Resting in Equanimity (Tibetan: mnyam par 'jog pa byed pa);
The ninth stage of resting the mind is also known as the ‘one-pointed mind of the desire realm� (Tibetan: 'dod sems rtse gcig pa). These are taken from Maitreya's Ornament of Mahayana Sutras (Mahāyānasūtrālaṅkāra).
