Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraDvigraha (啶︵啶掂た啶椸啶班す) or Dvigrahayoga refers to a type of Yoga affecting the fortunes of men, according to the B峁沨atsa峁僪it膩 (chapter 2), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Var膩hamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyoti峁).鈥擜ccordingly, 鈥淲e shall now proceed to give a brief description of (the qualifications of) a 箩测辞迟颈峁办补. [...] He must be able to use the A峁ａ弓akavarga tables to a given horoscope. He must know how the several Raja, Candra, Dvigraha, and Nabhasa yogas [i.e., dvigraha-yoga] affect the fortunes of men. He must also know how the fortunes of men are affected by the position and look of planets. He must be able to calculate the cause of one鈥檚 death and discover his future life鈥�.
: Notices of Sanskrit Manuscripts: Volume 1 (1871) (jyo)Dvigraha (啶︵啶掂た啶椸啶班す) refers to one of the topics discussed in the 艢颈艣耻丑颈迟腻, a Sanskrit manuscript collected in volume 1 of the catalogue 鈥淣otices of Sanskrit Manuscripts (first series)鈥� by Rajendralal Mitra (1822鈥�1891), who was one of the first English-writing historians dealing with Indian culture and heritage.鈥� The 艢颈艣耻丑颈迟腻 manuscript authored by K峁涐梗峁嘺r膩ma represents a primer on astrology, giving rules for calculation of nativities and most of the topics usually treated of in Indian astrological. It contains 2,457 艣濒辞办补蝉.鈥擳he catalogue includes the term鈥� Dvigraha in its 鈥榮ubject-matter list鈥� or Vi峁ya (which lists topics, chapters and technical terms). The complete entry reads: 诲惫颈驳谤补丑补迟谤颈驳谤补丑补测辞驳腻诲颈辫丑补濒补峁� .
Jyotisha (啶溹啶啶むた啶�, 箩测辞迟颈峁 or jyotish) refers to 鈥榓stronomy鈥� or 鈥淰edic astrology鈥� and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
