ٰṣṭṛt (द्रष्टृत्व, “spectator-hood).—That which is not conscious, can not be a spectator. Puruṣa is ṣṭ (spectator), because it is conscious. That means the spectator-hood (ṣṭṛt) of the ܰṣa can be inferred, from its characteristic—consciousness (cetanava), through a پ쾱 type of inference. Characterizing ܰṣa by ṣṭṛt, it is signified that by the grace of consciousness, the ṇa of the nature of pleasure, pain and indifference constitue bodies as causes and effects, and accordingly, the neutral ܰṣa experiences these, owing to proximity, being ascribed with agency of experience.

ٰṣṭṛt (द्रष्टृत्व) refers to (the state of) awareness, according to the Sāṅkhyakārikā.—In Brahmanical literature, ܻīԲ often means a neutral person, such as in the compound; “friends, neutrals and enemies. [...] Also, ܻīԲ has been used in the Sāṅkhyakārikā to qualify the individual soul (ܰṣa). After describing the qualities of the Puruṣa as the state of witnessing, isolation, neutrality, awareness (ṣṭṛt) and non-agency in Kārikā 19, the Sāṅkhyakārikā (20) then qualifies Puruṣa as ܻīԲ.
