This page describes the support of the four kinds of pure meditation which is verse 9.40 of the English translation of the Tattvartha Sutra which represents the essentials of Jainism and Jain dharma and deals with the basics on Karma, Cosmology, Ethics, Celestial beings and Liberation. The Tattvarthasutra is authorative among both Digambara and Shvetambara. This is verse 40 of the chapter Stoppage and Shedding of Karmas and includes an extensive commentary.
Verse 9.40 - The support of the four kinds of pure meditation
Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of Tattvartha ūٰ 9.40:
त्र्येकयोगकाययोगायोगानाम� � �.४० �
ٰ첹DzⲹDzDz峾 || 9.40 ||
The four types of pure meditation�śܰԲ–are, in order mentioned already, of three activities (yoga), of one activity, of bodily activity, and of no activity. (40)
Hindi Anvayarth:
अन्वयार्�: [त्र्येकयोगकाययोगायोगानाम्] ऊप� कह� गय� चा� प्रकार के शुक्लध्यान अनुक्र� से ती� यो� वाले, एक यो� वाले, मात्� काययोग वाले और अयोगी जीवो� के होते हैं।
Anvayartha: [tryekayogakayayogayoganam] upara kahe gaye cara prakara ke shukladhyana anukrama se tina yoga vale, eka yoga vale, matra kayayoga vale aura ayogi jivom ke hote haim |

The support or the base of the four kinds of pure meditation�śܰԲ–is mentioned next.
The term �yoga’–activity–has been explained already (ūٰ 6-1). These must be taken respectively with the four types of pure meditation�śܰԲ. In the ascetic with threefold activity, the first type of pure meditation�ṛtٱٲ첹–a. In the ascetic with just one activity out of the three, the second type of pure meditation�ekatvavitarka–a. In the ascetic with just the bodily activity, the third type of pure meditation�ūṣmپپ–a. In the ascetic with no activity (Dzī), the fourth type of pure meditation�ܱ貹ٲԾپ–a.
