Explanation in English from Ācārya Pūjyapāda’s Sarvārthasiddhi:
The divisions of cognition (upayoga) are described next.
Cognition (upayoga) is of two kinds:
- knowledge-cognition (ñԴ- payoga) and
- perception-cognition (岹śԴDZ貹Dz).
Knowledge-cognition (ñԴDZ貹Dz) is of eight kinds:
- sensory knowledgeپñԲ,
- scriptural knowledgeśܳٲñԲ,
- DzⲹԳñԲ,
- ٱ貹ٳԲḥpⲹⲹñԲ,
- dzԾԳ𱹲ñԲ,
- wrong sensory knowledgeٲⲹñԲ, kumati,
- wrong scriptural knowledgeśܳñԲ, śܳٲ, and
- wrong DzⲹԳṅgñԲ.
Perception-cognition (岹śԴDZ貹Dz) is of four kinds:
- ocular perceptionṣu岹śԲ,
- non-ocular perceptionṣu-岹śԲ,
- clairvoyant perception岹śԲ, and
- omniscient perception𱹲岹śԲ.
How are these, knowledge and perception, different? Knowledge-cognition (ñԴDZ貹Dz) is with details and, therefore, called or savikalpa. Perception-cognition (岹śԴDZ貹Dz) is without details and, therefore, called Ծ or nirvikalpa or 峾Բ屹ǰ첹Բ. These occur in succession in ordinary souls (non-omniscient souls), but occur simultaneously in those who have annihilated karmas.
Though perception occurs first, knowledge being more worthy is mentioned first in the ūٰ. Earlier, five kinds of right knowledge (ⲹñԲ) have been mentioned. But here, three kinds of wrong knowledge are also mentioned as this is the section dealing with cognition (upayoga), in general.
