Vimāna The vimana or the main deuḷa of the Nila Mādhava temple is a saptaratha rekhā order structure and its height is about 50 feet from the ground of the temple (Pl.No-16). It is divided into four parts along with the vertical plane .The four divisions are such as pista, bāḍa, gandi and mastaka. The structure of the vimāna is erected on the piṣta (plinth) of 2 feet high. The piṣta of the vimāna consists of three horizontal mouldings. The bāḍa is trianga i.e. having three fold divisions such as pābhāga, jāṃgha and baranda. The pābhāga of the bāḍa consists of the conventional mouldings of khurā, kumbha, pattā, kani and basanta. The jangha of the bāḍa is decorated with khākharā muṇḍis i.e. (miniature khākharā order deuḷas). The central niches of the three sides of bāḍa are housed with pārsvadevatā images of Varāha, Narasimha and Trivikrama. Pārsvadevatās The four handed image of Varāha is the pārsvadevatā of the southern side. He has been installed on the double petalled lotus pedestal. He holds cakra in right upper hand, the right lower hand holds the hand of a female figure, possibly Pṛthvi, the left upraised arm carries the figure of goddess Pṛthvi and the left lower hand possesses conch respectively. The background slab of the deity is decorated with a flower medallion. The upper two corners of the slab are carved with flower designs. The image of Narasimha is the pārsvadevata of the back or western sidewall of the vimāna. The four handed mutilated image of Narasimha has been installed on the double petalled lotus pedestal. All the hands of the deity are completely broken. The image of Trivikrama is the pārsvadevata of the northern side. He has been installed on the decorated pedestal. He displays cakra in right upper hand, flower (lotus) in right lower hand, conch in left upper hand and gadā in left lower hand respectively. His right leg firmly sets on the ground and the left uplifted leg is touching the image of Brahmā. There is an apsara figure carved on the top corner of the right side of the background slab of the deity. The baranda of the bāḍa consists of three horizontal mouldings, which are bereft of decorative ornamentations. The bāḍa of the vimāna is surmounted by the curvilinear superstructure and it exhibits seven pagas or rathas. All the pagas of the gandi are mostly undecorated. The jhapā siṃhas are only projected on the middle portions of the three side central rāhā pagas of the gandi except the eastern or front rāhā. The base 134
