Playing of various games for the purpose of recreation and amusement was prevalent among the different communities and tribes of Assam. They played these games to get rid of the stress and tensions after the daylong strenuous works. Games were considered to be leisure time activity.
The Sonowal Kacharis also played a numbers of games in the earlier days. These indigenous games are very rarely played by the children or the youths in the present day. During the field study, observed that the children do not know the name of the games and the methods of playing the games. Some tradition bearers in the village areas informed about the games which were a part of their culture. Some of the games of the Sonowal Kacharis are as follows:
Khuli Khel (or Kholiguti Khel) game is played by digging some holes in the ground. Two rows of holes and in each row ten holes are dug. In each hole, seeds of tora, batoluguti or other such hard seeds are placed. The game starts with the distribution of the seeds from the left side.[1]
Five seeds will be there in each hole. Total hundred seeds or balls are required to play the game. In the first round one player distribute the balls and in this process when the balls in one hole are finished then he take the balls from the next hole. While doing so it the player finds a hole to be empty then he owns all the balls in the next hole. At last they find that the holes become empty and count who gained maximum number of balls. One who earn maximum is considered to be the winner. In the next round if they want to start the game than one gained less number of balls has to borrow from the other player.
