Part 3.5 - Calendrical Festivals
Robert Jerome Smith has stated, ‘The festivals which can be thought of as a general participation festival and which are characterised by large group celebrations. One has the right to take part simply by virtue of being a member of a community, indeed it is after a man’s participation that confirms him as a member. The celebration is generally institutionally sanctioned and celebrated annually on a fixed date.[1]
The Sonowal Kacharis celebrate the calendrical festivals like the other Hindu people of Assam. Besides celebrating their own festivals they also celebrate other festivals like the death anniversaries of great saints and the Mahapurusas. The Republic day, Independence Day, Saraswati puja, Janmastami, Durga puja and the other unique calendrical festivals like the Baithou puja are celebrate with their distinct custom.
