While Lothana was lamenting the loss of Lohara. and the vast treasures therein, Mallarjuna pleasure-seeking youth, found ample scope and funds to squander away on dancers and actors, courtesans and women of easy virtue, and rogues and parasites. Jayasimha, who had been watching the developments with keen interest, planned a secret attack on Lohara through Chitrarathe. Though Chitraratha was easily repulsed in his first attempt, reinforcements arrived and Mallarjuna was compelled to sue for peace and agreed to pay the requisite tribute to Chitraratha through the mediation of his mother Jayasimha, however, was not gratified with the presents and had other plans in his mind. Mallarjuna, on the other hand, feeling secure again, started squandering the accumuldated treasures at Lohara on the least desirable persons who were out to fleece him dry. Jayasimha now tried to win over Sujji to his side, for an alliance between the 1. Rajatarangini by Kalhana, II, viii, 1942,946. 2. Ibid., II, viii, 1948,62 3. Ibid., II, viii, 1963. 4. Ibid. 5. 438 latter and Mallarjuna would not have suited his plans. Lakshmaka, who was entrusted with this task, graciously offered every high office to Sujji except that of the Chief Justice. But these did not satisfy him. At last, when Somapala had come to pay Lakshmaka a visit, he offered through the latter even his 'Hair-braid' or a garland from his head, which was enough to gratify Sujji. A few courtiers, who were opposed to Sujji, were banished while other meekly acquiesced to this change when the King himself honoured him by receiving him in person? Lothana, in the meanwhile, was not sitting idle at Bappanlala. Helped by some Thakurs, he repeatedly led incursions into the Lohara territory, looted the bazars, carried away horses belonging to Mallarjuna and also destroyed some of his outposts. Ultimately, Mallarjuna was compelled to make peace with him through the mediation of Kosh thesvara and the three together planned to invade the territories of Jayasimha. Kosh thesvara and Lothana had the support of some Damaras also but, before the Damaras and the rebels could effect a union, Jayasimha fell upon 1. Rajatarangini by Kalhana, II, viii, 1980. 2. 439 them and overpowered their leader! Unfortunately for him, Lakshmaks, the Lord-Chamberlain, died in the meantime, and Jayasimha could not press home his advantage. The confederacy of the rebels, too, did not fare better. While Koshthesvara, Lothana and Mallarjuna were away from Lohara, trouble broke out there? Mallarjuna had treacherously slain Udayana, a confidant of Koshthesvara and Lothana, and this breach of faith led the latter two to march against Mallarjuna and defeat him Though conciliated by Mallarjuna, Koshthesvara soon fell out with the former and there were frequent clashes between them, thus undermining their own strength against Jayasiinha The climax was reached in this game of intrigues and counter-intrigues when Mallarjuna, suspecting his mainstay and father-in-law, Manika, of a liaison with his mother, murdered him on the other hand, Jayasimha won over Koshthesvara to his own side Being sure of himself, Jayasimha now sent Sujji to capture Lohara? 440 surprise raid. Mallarjuna was now compelled to Mallarjuna I flee with sufficient treasures towards Avangha. He was, however, deprived of the major portion of his wealth by bandits and robbers on the way! Hardly a young man of eighteen, he exhibited neither courage nor ability and lost his throne and stronghold in 1132 A.D. Jayasimha was, at last, able to assert his authority over Lohara and appointed Harshata as governor of that place with Sujji remaining there for a while to ensure peace and stability in those regions. Sujji, however, was unfortunate in losing the favours of the King. The vicious atmosphere at the court poisoned the ears of Jayasimha against him and his earlier enemies, Dhanya and Udaya were now enjoying the confidence of the King. In the meantime, Sanjapala was won over to the King's side and Sujji was now clearly afraid of him for his personal safety. Jayasimhs, too, unable to bear Sujji any longer, lured Sanjapala to be the executioner of Sujji Differences with Sujji over punishments and appointments to high posts further aggravated the 1. 441 King's annoyance! Sujji now tried to win over Sanjapala to his side but it was only a surfacefriendship. Ultimately, Kularaja was entrusted to finish off Sujji, the former gained admission to the latter's chamber with two accomplices and murdered him? Similar fate avaited his partisans, sympathisers and kinsmen who were later disposed off by the King's men: As a reward for removing Sujji from the active scene for ever, the King conferred upon Sanjapala the post of the Commander-in-Chief and Kularaja was made the City-Prefect. Some of those who had been inimical to the King and were siding Mallarjuna, returned to the court, sued for and won the King's favour.6 Fresh Attempt by Koshtheswara and Fall of Mallarjuna—Koshthesvara, the Lavanya chief, was still an active figure against the King. He encouraged Lothana to attack Hadigrama? But as the intrigue leaked out to the King; Koshthesvara, prudently made excuses with 1. Rajatarangini by Kalhana, II, viii, 2089-902-97. It appears that Sujji wanted Uihana to be appointed the Lord of the Gate; for, after his murder, Ulhana, too, was finished off by Sanjapala and Rilhana (Ibid., II, viii, 2163-66,)- 2. 442 Lothana and made peace with Jayasimha. The King, without showing his overt hand, tried to get Koshthesvara murdered, but the latter was clever enough to sense the design and prepared to fight it out with the royal forces Koshthesvara was, however, routed and fled from the Valley. Koshthesvara met Mallarjuna at Kurukshetra and the two formed a league against the King. The rebels marched into the Valley, chose a hilly fort surrounded by dense forests as their headquarters, and started enlisting men who were friendly to them? Jayasimha was quick to take action and the royal forces surrounded the rebels from all sides, the siege lasting several months. Later on, Mallarjuna, who had caused. considerable harassment to the King and was seeking shelter hither and thither, was providentially taken into custody by one of the King's trusted men at Savarnika Jayasimha promptly dispatched Udaya to bring him to the capital and the rebel was put behind bars at Navamatha Koshesvara was also wounded while offering resistance, and cast into prison where he 1. 443 soon breathed his last. Having thus gained a respite from internal feuds and recalcitrant elements, Jayasimha appointed Udaya as the Lord of Gate and Sringar as the Prime Minister, obviously as rewards for their services as help?
