Part 3.3 - Personal Ceremonies in Assam

Personal ceremonies are allowed to hold at the courtyard of Billeswar Devalaya nowadays. At present times even in the rural areas formation of nuclear family is on rise. So it becomes very difficult to manage the affairs of ceremonies at own residences. Besides it, the religiousness is also one of the aspects of family life. Unlike the western thoughts, every kind of relationship in our society, not only a social contract but this is also regarded as a religious sacrament. Consequently the people of modern times regarding the situation, like to arrange their personal ceremonies at the religious site. Billeswar Devalaya since its inception is renowned as a place of personal ceremony for all classes of people. The personal ceremonies celebrated at the Devalaya are: marriage, upanaya, annaprasan, birthdays, marriage anniversaries, sura-karan etc.

The Devalaya takes responsibilities of the ceremonies and arranges all logistics required to celebrate the ceremony. It collects a nominal amount of charge for each ceremony. The charge depends on the number of people who will attend the ceremonies. The Daloi is in charge of these ceremonies. The Devalaya arranges the materials required to perform the ceremonies and also prepares food for the invitees. In case of marriage ceremonies, the Devalaya committee issues a certificate in recognition of the nuptial knot to the newly married couple. The certificate written on a Devalaya letter head clearly states the marriage took place in front of the Devalaya committee with all religious process performed completely.
