Advaitámrita. The preeminence of the Vidánta as a means of salva-
tion. By Jagannátha Sarasvatí, disciple of Harihara Sarasvatí. The
subject of the work is treated in the form of a dialogue. Vivekás'rama
Yáti, or the saint of the hermitage of dispassion, in course of his search
for a peaceful hermitage, encounters Chittavritti, ( mind), who calls
herself his elder sister, and enters into conversation on the subject
of salvation. The work is divided into five kavala or mouthfuls of
nectar. Contents : I introduction. II Atma defined, its character. The
power of the Godávari, and other rivers to afford salvation; the story
of Andhaka. III Proofs of the felicitous character of the soul. IV.
Impermanence of worldly pleasures, and nonduality of the soul. V.
The difference between spirit, and matter; a quotation on the subject
from the Chhándogya Upanishad. Dr. Hall states (Contributions,
p. 14) that the work "purports to have been written for the use of one
Vivekásrama; that personage, however, is entirely imaginary, and plays
the part of the tutor and not the taught.
