xxxiv PREFACE. on this work by Krsna Misra (No. 340). The author belonged to the Kantsyakula, a very influential family in Udisya. His grandfather was a very learned man named Rama. The name of the commentary is Alamkara-sudhakara. JAINA WORKS. The only two original sutras of the Jainas in this volume are Thanangasutra (102), and Vipaka sruta sutram (267). The only commentary to an original sutra is the Antagadadasanga satranrtti (14). Even the Jainas in ancient times used the word upanisad in their literature. Adhyatmopanisad (10), by Acarya Hemacandra, a contemporary and teacher of Kumarapala, is a work on Yogasastra. The work is in verse and complete in twelve prakasas. The present manuscript ends with the fourth chapter. Samaya Sundara Gani was the pupil of Sakala Candra Gani. Sakala Candra was the pupil of Jaina Manikya Suri of the Kharataragaccha, who obtained the title of Yugapradhana from Akbar. There is a hemistitch a rajanam dadate saukhyam Samaya Sundara explained this hemistich in 800,000 different ways and put them in the form of a book entitled Artharatnavali or Ast laksarthi (22). There is a Jaina work named Sarvartha-siddha-sutra, which has a commentary entitled Tattvartha-Ratnakara (105). The commentary is by Prabhavacandra, the pupil of Dharmacandra. The duties of Jaina sadhus are enumerated in the work entitled Kalpantarvaryam (51). The author in the opening verse speaks very highly of Siddha Bhupati. Satrunjaya Mahatmyam (286), by Dhanesvara, belonging to the Acarya Raja Gaccha, is complete in fourteen sargas. It relates to a mountain named Satrunjaya in Kathiawad, and incidentally treats of the great men among the Jainas. Samayaka tika-vartikam in Hindi (333) is a work for the atonement of all sorts of sins. Sabda-Ratnakara (289) is a kosa by Sadhu Sundara
