PREFACE. xxxi description of this work in his report on a search of Sanskrit and Tamil manuscripts in Madras for 1893-94. Kosa samgraha (No. 67), by Madhusudana, appears to be unknown to Aufrecht. It seems to have been compiled from Amarakosa, Ekaksarakosa, Vakarabheda, Vakarabheda, Nakarabheda, Usmavarnabheda and Vyadi. For a Bengali Manuscript it appears to be old, as it was copied in the Saka year 1590. Namamala vrtti (140) is a commentary by Hemacandra on his Abhidhana cintamani or Namamala. Nanartharatnam, by Srinatha (139), is an Amekarthakosa for the beginners. Visvaikaksaranamamala (271), by Visva Sambhu Muni, is an Ekaksara kosa in which Ekaksara words are alphabetically arranged. VYAKARANAM. Panini's school is represented in this volume by six works. Praudhamanoramatika (841), by Hari Diksita, the son of Viresvara Diksita, and grandson of Bhattoji Diksita, who is the author of Siddhanta Kaumudi and its commentary Praudhamanorama. Hari Diksita's commentary on Praudhamanorama goes by the name of Sabdamanorama. See I.O. Cat., p. 174 B. A commentary on Sabdendu Sekhara mentioned in No. 290, entitled, is by Udayamkara; a commentary on the Paribhasendusekhara entitled Tripathaga, by the son of Venkatesa and Savitri, is described under No. 291. The name of the work should be read Paribhasendu sekharatrka in the place of Sabdendusekhara paribhasatika which is misleading. See Stein 42. Bhava Prakasika (292), by Vaidyanatha Payagunda, is a commentary on commentary on Haridiksita's Sabdaratna. See Florentine Cat. No. 170. The commentator quotes the Mangalacarana of Sabdaratna. But in his own Mangalacarana he speaks of commenting on not Sabdaratna but Sabdaratnendusekhara. Considering the relation in which Vaidyanatha
