पुराणम - [purāṇam - ] ʱĀ
[Vol. XII, No. 1
According to Kane (History of Dharmasāstra, Vol. I) the स्मृतितत्त्व
[ṛtٲٳٱ
]
was composed between 1520-1570 A. D., हरिभक्ति विला [haribhakti vilāsa ] about 1562
A. D., and the वीरमित्रोद [īٰǻ岹ⲹ ] was composed between 1610-1640 A. D.
Now it is interesting to note that neither Gopala-bhaṭṭa (who was
a contemporary of Raghunandana and also belonged to Bengal)
nor Mitra-miśra reads the second line of this verse as-- 'तुलसी कृष्-
तुलसी सद्यस्तुष्टिकर हरेः [tulasī kṛṣṇa-
tulasī sadyastuṣṭikara hare
]
'. No other Nibandhakāra has quoted this verse.
Thus Raghunandana's text 'तुलसी कृष्णतुलसी सद्यस्तुष्टिकर हरेः [tulasī kṛṣṇatulasī sadyastuṣṭikara hare] ' is not sup-
ported by any other Nibandhakāra.
Now let us see the position of the text of this verse in the
Manuscripts of the Vāmana-Purāna. We collated 20 manuscripts
and consulted some 10 manuscripts, all of various versions belong-
ing to different regions and written in different scripts, such as
Śārada, Kashmirian, Bengali, Telugu, and of dates ranging from
1522 A. D., for constituting the text of the Vamana-Purana. None
of these manuscripts, however, not even the Bengali manuscripts,
contain the text of this verse as quoted by Raghunandana. The
text of this verse as found in the MSS is almost the same (with a
few variants) as quoted in the हरिभक्तिविला [󲹰󲹰پ ] and the वीरमित्रोद. [īٰǻ岹ⲹ. ] The
text constituted on the basis of these MSS in our Critical Edition
of the Vāmana-Purāna is as follows:-
बिल्वपत्रं शमीपत्र पत्र भृङ्गमृगाङ्कयो
तमालामलकीपत्र शस्त केशवपूजन  ( [bilvapatra śamīpatra patra bhṛṅgamṛgāṅkayo |
tamālāmalakīpatra śasta keśavapūjane || (
]
68.15 )
The variants in the MSS are as follows:-
(a) तिलपत्रं ( [tilapatra ( ] for बिल्वपत्रं ) [bilvapatra )] ; (b) भृङ्गमृगाह्वयो [ṛṅṛg󱹲 ] ; भृङ्गमदाङ्कयोः भृङ्गहिमाङ्कयो [bhṛṅgamadāṅkayo bhṛṅgahimāṅkayo ] ;
भृङ्गारकस्  ( [bhṛṅgārakasya ca (] for भृङ्गमृगाङ्कयो ) [bhṛṅgamṛgāṅkayo )] ; (c) तमालमालती ( [tamālamālatī (] Bengali MSS), तमालमालकॶ
( [ٲī
(
]
for तमालामलकी ) [tamālāmalakī )] ; (d) हर ( [hari (] for केशव ). [keśava ). ] One Kashmirian MS with a
Sanskrit commentary of the Kashmirian Pandita Rāmacandra-
bhatta has an additional line also as - केसरी माधवीपत्र सदापुष्प तथेन्दुकम्.
[kesarī mādhavīpatra sadāpuṣpa tathendukam.
]
Thus the line 'तुलसी कृष्णतुलसी सद्यस्तुष्टिकर हरेः [tulasī kṛṣṇatulasī sadyastuṣṭikara hare] ' quoted by Raghu-
nandana in his fat is conspicuously absent in the MSS too.
But the Kashmirian MSS read the previous verse (68.14 of the
critical Edn.) as follows
एतान हि प्रशस्तानि कुसुमान्यच्युतार्चने
सुरभीणि तथान्यान वर्जयित्वा तु केतकीम्  ( [etāni hi praśastāni kusumānyacyutārcane |
surabhīṇi tathānyāni varjayitvā tu ketakīm | (
]
68.14)
