RV. VII. 18. 11.
It is perhaps an accidental coincidence that the above hymn
refers to the number of tribes against whom Indra fought as
twentyone a number that is indissolubly connected with Paraśu-
rāma in later times.
On another occasion, (RV. IX. 101, 13), the Bhrgus are
referred to, as fighting against a demon called Makha.
प्� सुन्वानस्यान्धसो मर्त� � वृ� तद्वचः �
अप श्वानमराधस� हत� मख� � भृगव� �
[pra sunvānasyāndhaso marto na vṛta tadvaca� |
apa śvānamarādhasa� hatā makha� na bhṛgava� ||
]
Sāyana says here :- सुन्वानस्य [ܲԱԲⲹ ] x x X तत्र दृष्टान्तः �
मख� � � यथ� पुरापराद्ध� मखमेतन्नामान� भृगव� अपहतवन्त� तथापहतेत्यर्थः �
[tatra dṛṣṭānta� |
makha� na | yathā purāparāddha� makhametannāmāna� bhṛgava� apahatavanta� tathāpahatetyartha� |
]
In the Atharva Veda (V. 18. 10-11; V. 19. 1-11) there is a
curious anecdote that narrates the irretrievable ruin of Srñjaya
Vaitahavyas when they slaughtered the cow of the Bhṛgu.6
ये सहस्रमराजन्नासन् दशशत� उत �
ते ब्राह्मणस्� गा� जग्ध्व� वैतव्याः पराभवम� �
गौरे� तान्हन्यमाना वैतहव्या� अवातिरत् �
ये केसरप्राबन्धायाश्चरमानामपेचिरन� �
[ye sahasramarājannāsan daśaśatā uta |
te brāhmaṇasya gā� jagdhvā vaitavyā� parābhavam ||
gaureva tānhanyamānā vaitahavyā� avātirat |
ye kesaraprābandhāyāścaramānāmapeciran ||
