The Non-tribal Style: Typologies and Technique

Different tribes and communities, resplendent with their traditional culture, inhabit Assam. The population of the state can be segregated in different way such as on geographical distribution, ethnic variety or by religious sect. But a sectarian division or geographical segregation does not turn helpful while discussing the vernacular architecture. Rather, the segregation of the population to tribal and non-tribal division proves effective for the discussion of architecture. Consisting of different castes and communities, the nontribal population, which is dominantly Hindu, represents the “elite culture in the valley. The vernacular architecture of the non-tribal division display considerable homogeneity and it is discerned in the forms, general lay out, technique etc. of the residential architectures.

The Non-Tribal style or the dominant vernacular architecture style of Assam possesses primarily two typologies of architecture viz. the thatched-bamboo made pajaghar / kutcha variety and the Assam type variety. These earth-fast thatched houses are primarily gabled shaped and constructed on earthen plinth that extends to the eaves. The first variety is more ancient and traditional, constructed primarily with bamboo and thatch, while the Assam type developed during the colonial period, but gradually percolated into the folk tradition. This variety is relatively modern and sophisticated in the concept, use of material, layout, and form. The Assam type may be thatch roofed, where the technique of roof construction and roofing is similar with the other. But in the other aspects like use of materials and construction technique of other parts of the house, it is quite different from the previous. However, the different traditional norm and ritualistic consideration are similar in respect of a popular Assam type house when constructed by the folk people.
