Vāyu holds prominent place in the Vedas. In the Puruṣa Sūkta he
is said to have sprung from the breath of Puruṣa.
According to the Viṣṇu Purāṇa and epics, Vāyu is the king of
Gandharvas. The Vāyu Purāṇa is one in which Vāyu has declared the
laws of duty in connection with the Sveta Kalpa.
The Bhāgavata Purāṇa relates that once the sage Nārada incited
Vāyu to break the summit of mount Meru, Vāyu raised a terrible
storm lasting for a year, but since Viṣṇu's bird Garuḍa shielded the
mountain with his wings, all the blasts of the wind-god were futile.
Nārada told him to attack the mountain when Garuḍa was absent.
Vāyu did so and breaking off the summit of the mountain, he hustled
it into the Sea, where it became the island Lanka.
Vāyu who is the Symbol of terrific might, persistence, ruthless-
ness and omnipresence has other names such as Anil, Marut, Pavana,
Vāta, Garuda vaha, Jala-kantara etc.
xi) Myth of Parjanya
This God plays a very subordinate position among the deities of
the Ṛgveda. He is celebrated in only three hymns. His praises are
sung in the hymn of Atharva Veda. In some passages the word
parjanya have the appellative sense of 'rain cloud'. In most passages,
however, the word clearly represents the personification which
presides over the rain-cloud, while generally retaining the attributes
belonging to the phenomenon. Parjanya is often spoken of as a bull.
