Preface The present research work in the field of Vaisnava purÄášic literature, brings out multi-dimensional significance of ten major incarnations of Lord Visášu. However, different Vaiᚣášava incarnations have been dealth with in various original sources like Vedas, Upanisads and the PurÄášas. At the same time, it should taken note of that such descriptions of Vaiᚣášava incarnations are alike, in some respects in different sources. Yet they embrace a single central theme i.e., over-all supremacy of Lord Viᚣášu. With this objective, the thesis brings to light variant descriptions. It serves another purpose of discovering the impact of various incarnations on social conditions then. Verily it is a comprehensive note that each and every incarnation of Lord Visášu has a unique emphasis on reviving social, political, philosophical and religious set up among the people then at large. Such purÄášic descriptions of forms of Lord Viᚣášu have been made alive by means of archeological econographic relics with untiring efforts by ancient kings of various dynasties beginning from Gupta period. These historical evidences reveal the truth of popularity of Vaiᚣášava religion during the reign of those kings. All these informations with original fervor are brought here into a homogenious whole in a systematic way. Such work of difficult task was successfully accomplished due to kind and generous encouragement of my research guide, 2 V. D. &,
