The Legends and Myth of Rudra
This myth occupies a subordinate position in the Rgveda. He is celebrated in three entire hymns. His name occurs seventy-five times. The Rgueda gives its physical features.99 He shines like the brilliant Sun, like gold. 100 He is arrayed with golden ornaments and wears a glorious multiform necklace. 101 The later Samhitas add a number of other fraits. 102 He is thousand eyed. The Rgveda often mentions Rudra's weapons of offense. He is once said to hold the thunderbolt in his arm. His lightning shaft discharge from the sky traverses the earth. He is usually said to be armed with a bow and arrows which are strong and swift. He is identified with Agni in the Atharvaveda, and in the Taittiriya Samhita and in the Satapatha Brahmana. 103 He is described in the Rgveda as fierce and destructive like a terrible beast. He is called Asura also. The hymns addressed to him chiefly express fear of his terrible shafts and deprecation of his wrath.
