This is an English study of the Tarkabhasa of Kesava Misra: a significant work of the syncretic Nyaya-Vaisesika school of Indian philosophy widely used as a beginner's textbook in southern India and has many commentaries. This study includes an extensive overview of the Nyaya and Vaisesika philosophy, epistemology and sources of valid knowledge. It further deals with the contents and commentaries of the Tarkabhasa.

aṇutva ant not mahatva) and therefore the second cause, (greater number of
parts), should be resorted to. Since three dyads are considered sufficient to
produce this greater dimension (in the triad) there are no grounds to stipulate
more than three. There is an oft-quoted ancient verse in this connection.
Thus, it is observed that Kesava Misra gives a very systematic
description of all the sixteen categories of Gautama in his work. Among them
few useful topics, such as Soul, cognition, fallacies etc. he has been explained
repeatedly and few of these are briefly mentioned.
