Religion in SSM Belief in one personal god as a spiritual being with whom was conceived a close bond or association of his devotee, was one of Bhakti's most important constituents, and this mental attitude was the main guiding principle on the growth of the cults and the sects. Indians who are exclusive worshippers of cult deities Siva, Visnu, Siva, Sakti, Surya and Ganapati formed well known sects and Ganaptya. Saiva, Vaisna, Sakta, Saura Sucindrasthalamāhātmya refers only two sects of them. (1) Saiva the (2) Vaisana. A detailed study of SSM clearly shows that the most popular and accepted sect is Saivism, Siva is the supreme deity of SSM. Being a mahatmya, the work, shows no interest on establishing philosophical concepts of Saivism. It simply propagates the Bhakti, ie. devotion to Lord Siva. Even though SSM shows greater importance to Saivism it never shows rivalry to Vaisnavism. A mutual rivalry and clashes among these sects were common in yesterdays. SSM shows a tendency to unify Saivism and Vaisnavism. The work follows the concept of Bhagavata purana ie, the Trimurtis are one. Religious practices are the essential feature of every religion. Pilgrimage to holy places (Tirthayatra) and observing vratas are prominent among these practices. SSM glorifies so many tirthas and one vrata ie, the Ardra vrata. The following section will present an account of Saivism, Vaishnavism, Tirthayatra and Ardra vrta. A brief description of tree worship is also given. 169
