Story in Puraṇās In the voluminous purāṇic literature the story of Indra and Ahalya is cited in numerous places. A number of purāṇās give a detailed account of the story. Some other purāṇās just hint at the same. They follow the story of either Ramayana or Mahābhārata. 15 In Siva purāṇa it is said that Indra seduced Ahalya, the wife of
Gautama and had to suffer for his adultery¹. Linga Purāṇa hints at the lost
of the testicles of Indra". Mārkandeya Purāṇa says about the loss of
beauty and power of Indra due to the curse". Brahmānada purāṇa
reminds the power of the curse of sages and due to the curse of Gautama,
Indra lost his testicles". In Devi Bhagavata the episode is used as an
example for universal suffering". By the influence of time, even Indra had
thousand genital marks over his body and had to live a life in exile in the
lake mānasa.
Padma purāṇa, Brahma purāṇa, Brhmavaivartha purāṇa, Skanda
purāṇa and Ganesa purāṇa give detailed accounts of the episode.
Padmapurāṇa refer the story in two places. One is a detailed
description and the other is just a reference.
Sṛstikanda of Pamapurāṇa (51) unified the stories of Ramayana and
Mahābharata. It is an independant narration of Ahalyāharana, as it is
mentioned in colophone whose diadactic and aim is declared in the first
two slokās and never forgotten throughout the whole story, pervading the
whole narration with its moralistic atmosphere". Ahalya cannot identify
Indra who assumes the form of Gautama. Gautama cursed her in a
