Essay name: Studies in the Upapuranas
Author: R. C. Hazra
This book studies the Upapuranas: a vast category of (often Sanskrit) literature representing significant historical, religious, and cultural insights of the ancient Indian civilization. These texts provide rich information, especially on Hinduism covering theology, mythology, rituals, and dynastic genealogies.

SOME LOST UPAPURĀṆAS 19. The Saura-purÄṇa. 511 Besides the present Saura-p. which is a Åšaiva work,
there was an earlier Saura which is now lost. Full informa-
tion about this lost Saura-p. will be given under 'Saura-p.'
in Vol. III of the present work.
20. The Soma-purÄṇa.
This work is neither mentioned in any of the lists of
UpapurÄṇas nor drawn upon or referred to by any of the
commentators and Nibandha-writers. It is only Alberūni
who mentions it in that list of eighteen PurÄṇas which he
committed to writing from dictation." So, this UpapurÄṇa
must have been written earlier than 850 A.D., otherwise it
could not attain so much prominence as to be included among
the 'PurÄṇas' in Alberuni's time.
21. The Tvaá¹£á¹á¹-purÄṇa.
This work is not mentioned in any of the lists of Upapu-
rÄṇas. Of the commentators and Nibandha-writers it is
only Devaṇabhaá¹á¹a who is found to quote one verse from
this UpapurÄṇa in his Smá¹›ti-candrika." So, this work
must have been written earlier than 950 A.D.
22. The Urdhva-purÄṇa.
This work is not mentioned in any of the lists of Upa-
purÄṇas, but it is drawn upon in the Väkya-ratnÄkara of
Govinda (son of Gaṇaka SadÄÅ›iva MiÅ›ra).78
78 So, it must
be dated earlier than 1550 A.D.
